I still remember the time years ago when I was so excited to find sugar snap peas listed as approved for Phase One for the (original) South Beach Diet! And now that I’m following more of a carb-conscious approach to eating they’re one of my favorite low-carb snacks. And I love to use them as an ingredient in salads and stir-fries as well.
You can get them in a huge bag if you shop at Costco, but the one-pound size above from Kroger is the one I buy most often, and this is something I almost always have in my fridge. And Sugar Snap Peas are something I feel is always a healthy choice, whether I’m eating them as an ingredient in a recipe or just as a snack, so they definitely qualify to be one of my Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks.
Are Sugar Snap Peas low in carbs?
You may be suspicious about a vegetable that has sugar in the name, but one cup of Sugar Snap Peas only has 3 net carbs! And they’re often just called snap peas if that name appeals to you more!

I just saw your post, so I haven’t had a chance to try your sugar snap pea recipes. Sugar snap peas are one of my favorite vegetables–raw or cooked. I like to roast them in my air fryer with a little avocado oil spray and some seasoning (I change up my seasonings according to my mood or what else is on the menu. Besides S/P, I sometimes use lemon-pepper or Cavendar’s Greek seasoning. They may be for supper tonight!
That sounds good to me, will have to try them in the Air Fryer!
Loving these peas as a snack…just raw, with maybe some hummus. There are times when I just want something to "crunch" on and these fit the bill. I can get them fresh at my local grocery store (not in a package).
Love the ideas people are sharing for using them! I'm actually very surprised that so many people haven't had them raw; they are such a perfect snack!
I've never had them raw; will have to try it. I'm just getting into using the microwave for quickly steamed veggies and these are on the grocery list for today! I like them with some soy sauce and shredded seaweed.

As I said on FB, Kalyn, I love sugar snap peas. They are irresistible! I even had them as a side in a restaurant recently and was tickled pink that was one of the offerings. My late FIL always grew them and I never got tired of them, and yes, we did eat them raw sometimes. Finally, thanks for all the recipe links! We're having a tea event here on Saturday and I'll be looking at these and others to have low-carb dishes to off set the typical tea time fare. ๐

Martha, I have that cookbook so I had to immediately go look at the recipe. Sounds delicious, thanks for the recommendation!
I agree that sugar snap peas are delicious raw right from the bag. I also love them in the Grilled Lemon Chicken Salad recipe from the Original Barefoot Contessa Cookbook. I've made it several times and it always gets rave reviews.
Jill, that does sound wonderful and I would not have thought of it. Thanks for sharing!
Kevin, that's sad you can't find good fresh ones. I've had good luck crisping them in the salad spinner with really cold water (and even a few ice cubes) and then spinning them dry.
Kalyn,
They do make a good, raw snack – if you can find really fresh ones. But I usually can't, the fresh ones around here don't know how to snap. So I keep a bag of frozen in my freezer. They add a wonderful sweetness to a meal whether standing alone or as ingredient in a larger dish.
They are also amazing tossed in a bit of olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs and roasted… not obvious I know!
Lydia, I know just what you mean. I would hate to have to buy these at the regular grocery store, where they are so much more expensive.
Maryea, glad you liked the ideas.
Mary, I love them in stir-fries. I like to just barely cook them so they keep the crunch!
I really enjoy sugar snap peas… they're so sweet and crunchy. They're the perfect snack with a some hummus like Frances mentioned imho. …they're also wonderful in stir frys.
I love snap peas too. Thanks for all the great ideas for new ways to use them!
Once again, I miss my Costco. This is a perfect reach-in-and-grab snack to keep in the fridge.
I think they're completely delicious, just raw out of the bag! Frances, great idea to eat them with hummus!
They are good with hummus too!
I love these too, although funnily enough never have them uncooked. I sometimes have them in a salad, but blanch them for a couple of minutes first. Now I realise I probably don't have to. They are so verstile, salad, pasta, stir fry, soups…..
