This recipe for Making Fish in the Air Fryer  has some of those New Orleans flavors I’ve loved for so many years! And this Spicy Fish with Remoulade Sauce made a wonderful dinner served with Heart of Palm and Avocado Salad on the side.

And you know most of us should probably be eating more fish, and cooking fish with the Air Fryer can really help get fish on to the dinner table a lot more often! In fact I’d say that’s now my preferred method for cooking any type of fish.

The air fryer fish recipe really was amazing, but I’ll give you instructions for roasting it in the oven if you don’t have an Air Fryer! But if you haven’t discovered the ease and deliciousness of Air Fryer fish, I’m urging you to try it that way.

What ingredients do you need for this recipe?

(This is ONLY a list of ingredients for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe with ingredient amounts.)

What adds spicy flavor to this fish cooked in the Air Fryer?

I love Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning (affiliate link) and that’s the primary source of the spicy flavors here. But I also use Ground Sumac (affiliate link) and my beloved Szeged Fish Rub (affiliate link) to season the fish. (Use whatever combination of those ingredients you have if you don’t have them all.) And the Remoulade Sauce is a bit spicy too with spicy brown mustard, ground horseradish, and Green Tabasco sauce flavoring the creamy sauce.

What fish did I use for Spicy Air Fryer Fish?

When I found Kirkland Wild-Caught Chilean Sea Bass at Costco, I couldn’t resist it, and that’s what I used for this recipe. But you can make this with any mild white fish fillets such as Hake, Grouper, Haddock, Red Snapper, Orange Roughy, Halibut, or Cod. Some fish is more sustainable than others, so check out Seafood Watch if you want to check a particular type of fish.

How low in carbs is this recipe for fish in the Air Fryer?

This slightly spicy fish recipe has less than 3 net carbs per serving and 21 grams of protein!

What Air Fryer do I use?

I became a big Air Fryer fan after I discovered the Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) which is what I used for this recipe. This air fryer has a larger basket, which lets me fit four pieces of fish (or more), and I find this model easy to use. I also like having an air fryer that stays out on the counter. (You can use Air Fryer Recipes to see all the Air Fryer recipes on my site.)

How to make Spicy Air Fryer Fish with Remoulade Sauce:

(This is ONLY a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

  1. Thaw frozen fish in the refrigerator; let it come to room temperature before you start the recipe.
  2. Put fish between paper towels and gently press out some of the moisture.
  3. Mix powdered Sumac, Szeged Fish Rub, and Tony Chachere’s Seasoning. You can also just use my favorite Szeged Fish Rub (affiliate link) alone although it’s the Tony Chachere’s Seasoning that makes this spicy.
  4. Rub the fish with olive oil, then sprinkle on fish rub and rub all over both sides of the fish.
  5. Preheat Air Fryer to 400F/205C if your air fryer model needs to be preheated.
  6. Whisk together mayo, spicy brown mustard, ground horseradish, lemon juice, Creole Seasoning, Green Tabasco Sauce, Dill Pickle Relish, and a pinch of Black pepper to make the Remoulade Sauce.
  7. Cooking time will depend on the thickness of your fish; we cooked our fish pieces for 8 minutes.
  8. Fish is done when it feels firm but not hard to the touch and flakes apart easily.
  9. Serve the Air Fryer Spicy Fish hot, with plenty of Remoulade Sauce on the side.
  10. Use Seafood Recipes if you want to find more fish to eat with the Remoulade Sauce!

Make it a Low-Carb Meal:

The fish cooked in the Air Fryer that’s shown in the photo is served with Heart of Palm and Avocado Salad. For a low-carb meal, this would also be delicious with Spicy Mexican Slaw, Easy Grilled Vegetables, or Grilled Asparagus with Parmesan. Or if you want to keep the New Orleans flavors going, serve this air fryer fish with Spicy Cauliflower Dirty Rice!

Spicy Air Fryer Fish with Remoulade Sauce is an easy low-carb dinner that's loaded with flavor. I love cook fish in the Air Fryer, but see tips for cooking the fish in the oven if you don't have an Air Fryer.

Ingredients

Fish and Fish Rub Ingredients:

  • four six-ounce fish fillets (see notes)
  • 1 T olive oil for rubbing fish
  • 1 tsp ground Sumac
  • 1 tsp. Szeged Fish Rub
  • 1/2 tsp. Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning (or other Creole Seasoning)

Remoulade Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 cup mayo
  • 1 1/2 T Spicy Brown Mustard
  • 2 tsp. Paprika (preferably Szeged Sweet Paprika)
  • 2 tsp. ground horseradish
  • 1 T fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning (or other Creole Seasoning)
  • 1 tsp. Green Tabasco Sauce
  • 1 T Dill Pickle Relish
  • pinch of table-grind black pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Thaw frozen fish overnight in the refrigerator, then remove from the fridge and let it come to room temperature before you start the recipe.
  2. Put the thawed fish between a double layer of paper towels and gently press to press out some of the moisture.
  3. I mixed up an easy rub that had powdered Sumac, Szeged Fish Rub, and Tony Chachere's Seasoning. If you don't have all those things, be adventurous; there are all sorts of combinations that will taste good on fish. You can also just use my favorite Szeged Fish Rub (affiliate link) alone if you don't have the other ingredients, although it's the Tony Chachere's Seasoning that makes this spicy.
  4. Rub the fish with olive oil, then sprinkle on a bit of the fish rub and rub all over the surface of the fish. Prepare both sides this way.
  7. Cooking time will depend on the thickness of each piece; we cooked our fish pieces for 8 minutes. Fish is done when it feels firm but not hard to the touch and flakes apart easily.
  8. Serve the fish hot, with plenty of Remoulade Sauce on the side.
  9. TO COOK FISH IN THE REGULAR OVEN:
  10. Preheat oven or toaster oven to 400F/205 C. Let fish come to room temperature as described above.
  11. Follow instructions above for making the rub, rubbing fish, and making the Remoulade sauce.
  12. Put fish on a roasting pan that you've brushed with olive oil or sprayed with non-stick spray.
  13. Roast fish 8-10 minutes, or until fish pieces are firm but not hard to the touch, and fish flakes easily.

Notes

You need one per fish fillet per person; use any type of white fish fillet. If you're not cooking for four people I'd still make all the rub and save for another time.

The Remoulade Sauce is good on any type of fish or shrimp so I encourage you to make the full amount.

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
Fish in the Air Fryer is an easy perfect dish for low-carb or Keto diets. I would eat this for any phase of the original South Beach Diet, although South Beach would recommend reduced fat mayo for the sauce.

Historical Notes for this Recipe:
In 2010 I posted a Spicy Roasted Fish recipe made in the oven. After I became a fan of using the Air Fryer to make fish in 2021 I converted this into a recipe for making fish in the Air Fryer (with the option of cooking it in the oven). And the suggestion to serve with Remoulade Sauce was also added in 2021. The post was last updated with more information in 2025.
