Grilled Patty Pan Squash in serving dish with crumbled goat cheese

This year I’m growing vegetables at my old house in Salt Lake (and showing them off on Instagram), and the garden is bursting with Patty Pan Squash! People joke about leaving zucchini on the neighbor’s porch, but I’ve been giving away this fun scalloped squash to all my friends. And I’m also cooking them like mad, and when this experiment for Grilled Patty Pan Squash that we topped with crumbled goat cheese turned out to be such a winner, I couldn’t wait to share it! Most peope should have a month or two more of grilling weather, so I hope you get to try it.

There’s no doubt this is a riff on the ultra-popular Grilled Zucchini recipe on the blog. And if you don’t have Patty Pan Squash you can certainly grill some zucchini and serve it with crumbled goat cheese and get the flavors of this recipe. But this post is for the people who are looking ideas for cooking Patty Pan Squash! And judging from the way mine is growing like mad, I am guessing there are probably a few people looking for recipes using this very prolific squash.

What is Patty Pan Squash?

Patty Pan Squash is a summer squash variety that’s known for it’s distinctive flyer-saucer shape and scalloped edges. It’s also called flying saucer squash, scallop squash, peter pan squash, sunburst squash, and granny squash, and in some places it’s just called squash. The squash plants resemble zucchini plants and the individual squash can be dark green, light green, yellow, or white. Patty Pan squash is commonly cooked when it’s quite small and it can be used in many recipes calling for zucchini. And like other summer squash varieties, Patty Pan is quite low in carbs!

What ingredients do you need for this recipe?

What other cheese could you use for the recipe?

We loved the crumbled slightly-melted goat cheese with the mild flavor of the squash, and of course Feta would also be a good choice. I think Gorgonzola Cheese would also taste great with this. And if you switched it up a bit and marinated the squash in a dressing with cumin, lime, and olive oil, I think Queso Fresco or Cotija Cheese would be delicious here.

Can you Grill Patty Pan without an outdoor grill?

If you don’t have an outdoor grill this Grilled Patty Pan can easily be cooked on a stove-top grill pan with ridges (affiliate link) or a George Foreman Grill (affiliate link) with good results. Remember that the George Foreman Grill cooks both sides at once so grilling time will be a lot shorter!

How to make Grilled Patty Pan Squash:

(Scroll down for complete recipe with nutritional information.)

  1. The first photo shows the Patty Pan Squash, straight from the garden.
  2. I like to pick them when they aren’t more than 4 inches across, but some of these were slightly bigger than that.
  3. Slice a thin piece off the stem and blossom end of each squash.
  4. Then cut each patty pan in half crosswise.
  5. Mix ingredients to make the marinating liquid.
  6. Put squash pieces in a Ziploc bag or plastic container, add marinating liquid, and let marinate on the counter for a few hours.
  7. When you’re ready to cook, preheat grill to medium-high and drain squash in a colander.
  8. Put squash pieces on the grill and cook 4-5 minutes, or until you see grill marks when you lift.
  9. Then I rotated the pieces and cooked them 3-4 minutes more on the same side to make criss-cross marks. (Those photos really are slightly different.)
  10. Then turn squash over and cook about 3 more minutes, or until it’s soft when you pierce with a fork.
  11. Put cooked squash in a serving dish and season with salt and pepper.
  12. Then crumble over goat cheese (or any cheese of your choice) and serve.

The grilled Patty Pan would taste wonderful with Grilled Cod, Grilled Salmon Burgers, Grilled Shrimp Skewers, Greek Pork Chops, or Grilled Chicken with Balsamic Vinegar.
