Healthy Sweet Potato Recipes are something I started making after I became a food blogger and discovered savory sweet potato recipes! I never liked the super-sweet dishes with sweet potatoes that some people make for Thanksgiving. So for years I was one of those people who’d wrinkle their nose up at the mere mention of sweet potatoes (or yams as they are often mistakenly called.)
Now sweet potatoes seem like a must-have vegetable for Thanksgiving for me, and I like sweet potatoes in other savory dishes too. Of course sweet potatoes aren’t low in carbs, so they’re a special treat for me. This collection has sweet potato side dishes that would be great during the holidays, as well as soups, stews, and main dishes with sweet potatoes.
And see tips in this post for making some of the healthy sweet potato recipes lower in carbs. If you like sweet potatoes enough to indulge when they’re in season, I hope you enjoy some of my favorite sweet potato recipes!
Are they yams or sweet potatoes?
Even though they are often mistakenly called yams in U.S. grocery stores, the vegetables used to make these recipes are orange-fleshed sweet potatoes! But your store may call them yams or sweet yams.
How to make some of the healthy sweet potato recipes lower in carbs:
Many of these recipes can be made lower in carbs by using fewer sweet potatoes and more of the lower-carb ingredients, so notice those tips in this post.

Sweet potatoes + Feta; how can you go wrong!
Those double baked sweet potatoes look incredible! I'm making those asap.
Joanne, we are in complete agreement about the marshmallows!
Sweet potatoes are my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal! But minus the marshmallows. ๐
Thanks Jeanette; hope you and your parents enjoy!
I've got a few roasted sweet potatoes sitting in my fridge so I'll be trying one of these recipes tomorrow – my parents love eating sweet potatoes so I'll share this with them as well. Thanks Kalyn!
mmmmmmm love this!!! Need to try it soon.
So glad you like them!
Kalyn, what a yummy collection of good-for-you sweet potato recipes. They all look delicious!
Joanne, I am not surprised to hear that you're a sweet potato lover! Hope you have fun trying one or two of these.
Mel, your salad ideas are awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Yum I love sweet potato and we eat it a lot. ALWAYS savoury! I just don't understand why so many people add sugar! ICK!
I often roast cubes of sweet potato and keep them in the fridge to add to salads – a favourite is with rocket/arugula, steamed green beans, a few pine nuts and some blue cheese. And maybe a bit of grilled proscuitto. Or even just a basic salad with green leaves, tomato, avocado, red onion and maybe a bit of fetta.
My love for sweet potatoes knows no bounds and I can't wait to try out some of these for the big day!
Thanks Erica! Glad you like the recipes.
Wonderful list!I love sweet potatoes and all your recipes look delicious.
Donna, I buy Sumac online from the Spice house. Love it.
You always have a way to make me NOT miss the sugar! One question: I have never cooked with sumac. Where do I find it?
Donna
YUM!!
I did not appreciate sweet potatoes until a few years ago, probably because the ones I remember from growing up were the syrupy ones that came in a can, but now I do love them simply baked as well as baked sweet potato fries. Your soy glazed sweet potatoes with sesame seeds look especially good.
Thanks everyone for the nice thoughts about my sweet potato ideas. And I love the idea of sweet potato gratin with winter greens from Elizabeth. I'm gone away for the weekend visiting my sister's family but just thought I'd check in.
I am in the same camp with you on the sickly sweet sweet potato recipes. I can handle them diced and then cooked in a covered dish in the oven with butter, salt and cinnamon but NO SUGAR PLEASE! My absolute favorite savory sweet potato recipe is a gratin with winter greens on top of the sweet potatoes. Its my new favorite Thanksgiving dish. And then I always love sweet potato black bean burritos made with the leftover Thanksgiving turkey meat too.
I definitely prefer the savory sweet potatoes to the sweet. And since I'm the cook in the family, everyone else is learning to love savory, too!
Kalyn, I enjoy visiting your blog! I love your recipes. I have tried so many of them and they are always delicious. The breakfast casseroles are a staple at my house. Thank you!
Comment disappeared….. Who ever came up with the bright idea of marshmallows on sweet potatoes should be banished from the table…. These look delicious!
I wouldn't know where to start. They all look so delicious. If I had to pick one, it would be the one with the red onions!
