Kalyn’s Kitchen Turns 21!
Kalyn’s Kitchen is turning 21 years old today, and I’m sharing thoughts about that journey and how food blogging has changed! And if you’re a long time reader who’s finding this post, thank you for the support!
PIN this post if you want to find it later!

Every year on April 24 I acknowledge my blog turning another year older, and share thoughts about that. I’ll always be grateful that my talented brother Rand inspired me to start a food blog! But I did write a lengthy post last year for my milestone twenty year blogging anniversary, so this year I’m trying to keep it shorter.
I will always be grateful!
I still want to emphasize the deep gratitude I feel for the many, many people who have supported and helped me. And my barely tech-savvy senior citizen brain has been depending on smart younger people to help me with technology for many years! I’m also more thankful than ever for the many faithful readers who have followed my blog for years and sent me kind feedback.
I’m not planning to retire, but . . .
People ask me regularly when I plan to retire from the blog! But I’m still working on the site almost every day editing recipes and adding improvements, so I’m not really thinking about that! But I’m not going to lie; the internet has changed in many ways that make running a website harder and less rewarding.
I miss the days when the food blog world was a kinder and gentler place, with less competition! Now search engines demand specific formats that can make navigating recipes confusing to readers. And these days operating a website means paying for lots of monthly services to stay current and keep things working. Those costs keep going up while earnings keep going down. Social Media is a challenge to keep up with, and sometimes people aren’t on their best behavior there. And AI now can now give people the full recipe (often inaccurate) without them even coming to the site.
With all those concerns I want to repeat that it’s the support from readers that makes sharing recipes on this site still be rewarding. I feel a deep sense of loyalty to my long-time readers. The older I get, the more people have expressed concerns about the recipes going away. I want to repeat my pledge from last year that “I’ll do whatever I can to keep Kalyn’s Kitchen online as long as possible.”
Three Easy Ways You Can Support this Website:
- If you follow Kalyn’s Kitchen on social media, please like, comment, or share one of my recipe posts every so often. That type of engagement tells the algorithm that people want to see the recipes. That makes a huge difference!
- If you’re not already doing so, you can Subscribe to Kalyn’s Kitchen by e-mail. You’ll get three e-mails a week featuring a seasonal recipe I think you might want to try.
- And if you try one of my recipes and really enjoy it, leave a star rating on the website (down under the little thumbnail image in the complete recipe.) Those ratings get featured in search engine results and also encourage other people to try the recipe.
I’d love to hear your thoughts!
If you’ve managed to read this far, thank you again for the support; it really does mean the world to me! If you feel like joining the birthday celebrating, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments about how how the internet has changed during the time you’ve been using my website!

Congratulations, it’s been a joy to see you build your site over the years!
Thanks so much Heather! And thank you for all your help!
Happy blogiversary!
Thank you!
Congrats on 21 years! I’m not sure when I started following you but a little over 2 years ago I joined Weight Watchers and your recipes have been a life saver for me in my weight loss journey. I reached my goal weight (I had a modest goal weight, 30 pounds, which I exceeded by 5 pounds), last summer but have maintained and your website has given me loads of a variety of dishes so I have never been bored.
Dear Kalyn – 21 years is an amazing milestone to reach! I’ve been following you since 2008 when I was searching for tasty South Beach-friendly ideas, and still receive & use your recipes to this day. In fact, I just grilled chicken using your Savory Marinade and utilizing your diagonal cuts in the meat. Delicious!
Congratulations, too, on hanging in there with all the drastic online challenges you face. I’ll try to be better about submitting 5 star ratings to boost your search engine efforts!
Thanks for the good wishes Maureen! I appreciate your support. The star ratings really are so helpful, so thanks for that!
Happy 21st, Kalyn! I’ve been following you since I retired in 2010. Your egg bakes are a particular favorite of mine. Many thanks as well as much gratitude for your diligence for your great recipes. FYI: I do not use Pinterest or any other source for recipes. My son, Harry, is an IT person so I always check with him before venturing onto anything. I find your prefaces to your recipes endearing and I read each one thoroughly. Oh, Rand’s Stories on FB are great. Thanks again Kalyn.
Thanks Meg! So glad you are enjoying the recipes. Especially glad you like my intros, so many people complain about those and sa, “Just get to the recipe!”
Congratulations, Kaylyn on your 21st year. I’ve been a devoted follower for years because I have a host of dietary restrictions and you provide so much that has been helpful to me, I turned back to your in depth 20th birthday post. It was very interesting. I read your concerns about AI and, well, let’s just say it, thieves that have altered a lot about what I’ve enjoyed and used. I find that I’m just not going to pinterest because the marketing and encouragement for people to start their own business by simply taking other people’s recipes, photos, and even bios. I can spot them for now but it’s going to get worse. I’m sure this is a challenge for you. I’ve just put you in my email list so I get every post without pinterest, But I have a question. does it support you better if I find your pinterest posts and comment or like them? They are getting harder and harder to find.
Thank you for that thoughtful feedback. I agree, Pinterest has been a mess for a long time. They didn’t get a handle on all the stolen and re-directed PINS for a very long time, although they say they are cracking down on it now. I still do add things there, but not nearly as much in the early days. And comments on Pinterest don’t really make much difference, but thanks for asking.
I really appreciate you following by e-mail. And I don’t know if you’re on Facebook, but comments on the Kalyn’s Kitchen page really help with the Facebook algorithm (which is a mess most of the time.)
The stolen pins issue and AI have been very discouraging. Both of those have really impacted the two things that used to be my biggest sources of traffic (Google and PInterest.) But I do feel lucky that I still have a pretty large following of long-time supporters, which is what helps me keep going!
