Have you noticed the growing trend of using turnips as a low-carb stand-in for potatoes? I’m becoming quite a turnip fan myself, and these Air Fryer Turnip Fries were a new turnip experiment that was definitely a success! The turnip fries were so quick and easy to make and very low in carbs, but most important of all, they were absolutely delicious!

We tested our turnip fries with a variety of dipping sauces that I’ll mention below, but Kara and I absolutely loved them with our favorite Utah Fry Sauce! Of course in Utah every burger joint serves that mayo-ketchup mixture with fries, so I guess it’s not surprising we’d like it with these low-carb french fries. And we used sugar-free ketchup, so even the fry sauce was low in carbs!

And the Air Fryer Turnip Fries and fry sauce only need a few ingredients for a snack that I bet most low-carb eaters are going to enjoy as a french fry alternative. I calculated the nutritional information based on four servings, but even if you ate twice that much, the amount of carbs is really minimal! Grab a couple of turnips next time you’re at the grocery store and give this a try!

What ingredients do you need?

  • turnips
  • olive oil
  • Spike Seasoning (affiliate link), or other all-purpose seasoning blend
  • salt to taste
  • mayo
  • G. Hughes Sugar-Free Ketchup (affiliate link) or other sugar-free ketchup if you want “Utah Fry Sauce” to serve with turnips

Tips for choosing turnips with good flavor:

All turnips are not the same, and if you buy turnips that are old or too large, they can have a slightly sharp, unpleasant flavor. The solution is to be sure to buy turnips in a store where they don’t stay on the shelf too long, and choose small turnips.

Which Air Fryer Did I use?

I’m crazy about the Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) which is the one I use all the time. This air fryer has a larger basket, which lets me fit plenty of food, and I find this model very easy to use. I also like the convenience of having an air fryer that stays out on the counter.

What is Utah Fry Sauce?

In Utah nearly every fast food place serves french fries with a condiment called Fry Sauce. It’s even sold in a bottle in grocery stores in Utah! The basic fry sauce recipe is a mixture of about 2 parts mayo to one part ketchup. Start with that, taste, and adjust the mayo-ketchup ratio to taste; I like mine a bit heavy on mayo as you can tell from the photo. Different restaurants add things like dill pickle juice, barbecue sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika, but I’m partial to the basic fry sauce just made with mayo and ketchup. And of course I make my fry sauce with sugar-free ketchup (affiliate link).

What other sauce can you use for dipping the turnip fries?

We loved the Utah Fry Sauce with our turnip fries, and it’s so quick and easy to make. But if you’d like to try something else, these fries would taste great with Sriracha Dipping Sauce, Remoulade Sauce, Red Pepper Aioli, Mustard-Herb Sauce, Southwestern Ranch Dip, or Tzatziki Sauce.

Air Fryer Turnip Fries are a delicious low-carb alternative to regular fries made with potatoes, and these were seriously so delicious! We ate them with the famous Utah Fry Sauce, but see other sauce options in the post.

Ingredients

  • 2 small sized turnips
  • 1 T olive oil
  • 1 tsp. Spike Seasoning (see notes)
  • salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 2 T sugar-free ketchup

Instructions

  1. Choose two small turnips that look plump and firm.
  2. Preheat Air Fryer for 5 minutes at 375F/190C. (Some Air Fryers may not need to be reheated.)
  3. For easy peeling, start by cutting off the top and bottom of each turnip so it will sit flat.
  4. Then use a sharp knife to slice off the skin of the turnip all the way around.
  5. Keeping the turnip sitting flat, cut slices that are about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Then cut those slices into fries that are about 1/2 inch wide.
  7. Put the cut fries into a bowl and toss with olive oil and Spike Seasoning (affiliate link), or other all-purpose seasoning blend.
  8. Spread fries out in the Air Fryer basket, carefully arranging them in a single layer.
  9. I fit all the fries in one batch in my Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) but if your Air Fryer basket is smaller you might have to cook them in two batches.
  10. Cook the turnip fries 10 minutes, then remove the basket and carefully turn all the fries.
  11. Cook the fries for 5 more minutes; then check and turn any that are getting too brown.
  12. Cook about 2 minutes more, or until the turnip fries are nicely browned and cooked through.
  13. While fries cook, stir together Sugar-Free Ketchup and Mayo to make Utah Fry Sauce. (We like more mayo than ketchup as you can see, adjust to the amount of ketchup you prefer.)
  14. Season finished fries with salt to taste and serve hot.

Notes

Use any all-purpose seasoning blend if you don't have Spike.
