Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime)
I’ve made a lot of variations on deviled eggs, but these Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime) are one of my favorites! And you can make them more or less spicy, depending on what you prefer.
PIN Spicy Deviled Eggs to try them later!
There must be thousands of deviled egg recipes in the world, but one of my favorites has to be these Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime). What do you think about the sound of deviled eggs that are just a bit spicy with those Southwestern flavors?
And this recipe has been back in the archives on my blog with an old photo that was blurry and didn’t really show off how good these were, so recently Kara and I gave this recipe an update.
We didn’t change it much other than switching out yogurt for sour cream (which I’ve used in this recipe through the years since I don’t always have plain yogurt in my fridge), and cutting down a bit on the amount of lime juice. Of course you can add more lime juice to taste if you’re someone like me who likes a lot of lime!)
And this week I bet a lot of people are making perfect hard-boiled eggs and dyeing the eggs for Easter, so you might have a surplus of hard-boiled eggs later in the week. If so, I hope you consider giving these Spicy Deviled Eggs a try!
What ingredients do you need?
(This is only a list of ingredients; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)
- eggs
- mayo
- sour cream (or use all mayo if you prefer)
- fresh-squeezed lime juice; I used my fresh-frozen lime juice
- yellow mustard, not Dijon
- ground Chipotle chile Pepper (affiliate link) or Green Tabasco Sauce (affiliate link)
- salt
- green onions
How spicy are the spicy deviled eggs?
If you use the 1/4 teaspoon of ground Chipotle chile pepper that the recipe specifies, these are only slightly spicy. But once you taste the egg mixture, you can make it a bit more spicy if you prefer!
What if you don’t have ground Chipotle for this recipe?
If you don’t have ground Chipotle chili pepper and don’t want to buy it just for this recipe, I would use a small amount of Green Tabasco Sauce (affiliate link) to add the spicy flavor. And if you prefer regular Jalapeno flavor over the smoky flavor of Chipotle chiles (which are dried smoked Jalapeno peppers) you might even like the Green Tabasco better.
How many spicy deviled eggs does this recipe make?
This recipe makes 12 deviled egg halves, or 6 servings if you eat two halves, but it can easily be double or tripled if you want to make deviled eggs for a crowd; enjoy! And I start with 7 eggs because usually the whites get mangled on at least one egg, so if you’re not worried about the looks you might end up with 14 egg halves!
How low in carbs are the Spicy Deviled Eggs?
For this recipe, two deviled egg halves (one egg) has about 3 net carbs.
How to Make Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime):
(This is only a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)
- First, make perfect hard-boiled eggs using one of the methods recommended in my post.
- Let eggs cool, peel, and cut in half.
- Remove yolks and put into bowl. Mash yolks well with a fork.
- Slice green onions, and finely chop with chef’s knife.
- Mix together lime juice and ground Chipotle chile powder (or use about 1/2 tsp Green Tabasco Sauce if you prefer.)
- Add lime-Chipotle mixture to yolks.
- Then stir in mayo, mustard, sour cream (or more mayo), salt, and half the chopped green onions.
- Taste for seasoning to see if you want more lime juice, mustard, ground Chipotle chile powder, or salt.
- Stir until mixture is well combined.
- Arrange eggs white halves on serving plate.
- Use a rubber scraper to scoop yolk mixture into a small plastic bag. Cut off one corner of the bag (look for it!) and squeeze from the top to force the yolk mixture out the hole, into the egg halves.
- When all egg white halves are filled with yolk mixture, sprinkle with remaining green onions.
- Serve immediately, or refrigerate until serving.

Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime)
I love deviled eggs of all kinds, but these Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime) are one of my favorites! And you can make them extra-spicy or mild, whichever you prefer.
Ingredients
- 7 eggs (preferably about a week old)
- 2 T mayo
- 2 TÂ sour cream (see notes)
- 1 T fresh lime juice (or more)
- 1 T yellow mustard (not Dijon)
- 1/4 tsp. ground Chipotle chile peppers (more or less to taste, see notes)
- 1/2 tsp. salt (see notes)
- 2 green onions, green part only, finely chopped
Instructions
- First, make perfect hard-boiled eggs. I always cook one extra egg, because usually the white part gets mangled on at least one.
- Let eggs cool, then peel and cut in half crosswise.
- Carefully remove yolks and put into a flat bowl. (That makes it easier to mash them.)
- Mash yolks well with a fork
- Slice green onions, and finely chop with chef’s knife.
- Mix together lime juice and ground Chipotle chile powder. (If you don’t do this, you’ll have large flecks of chile powder in the deviled yolk mixture. The chile powder won’t dissolve completely, but adding it to the lime juice does make it blend in better.)
- Add lime-Chipotle mixture to mashed yolks, then stir in mayo, mustard, sour cream (or more mayo), salt, and half the chopped green onions.
- Taste for seasoning to see if you want more lime juice, mustard, Chipotle chile powder, or salt.
- Stir until mixture is well combined.
- Arrange eggs white halves on serving plate.
- Use a rubber scraper to scoop yolk mixture into a small plastic bag. Cut a small piece off one corner of the bag and squeeze from the top to force the yolk mixture out the hole, into the egg halves. (Filling the eggs can also be done with a spoon or a cake decorating tool.)
- When all egg white shells are filled with deviled yolk mixture, sprinkle with remaining chopped green onions.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate until serving.
Notes
Use all mayo and skip the sour cream if you prefer.
Use any spicy ground chile you prefer, or substitute about 1/2 tsp. Green Tabasco Sauce for the Ground Chipotle Chile in this recipe.

Just wanted to let you know why I’m unsubscribing from your website. Way too many ads! Cannot get to recipes without fighting off dozens of them. So not worth the aggravation.
I’m sorry you are not using the JUMP TO RECIPE feature, which will take you directly to the recipe post and bypass the ads.
I do try to monitor ads and keep them at a reasonable number, but those ads pay the bills at my house so they will never go away.
Lately you’ve inspired me to up my egg game. Â Made these today. Â I doubled the ground chipotle. Â Absolutely delicious!
I’m so glad I’m inspiring you and that you enjoyed the recipe!
Those look awesome!Â
Laura, me too! I am a bit of a salt lover myself, but these are pretty flavorful so I bet they are still good.
By request, I'm making these for Memorial Day this year. I got everything all ready to go and packed up, and realized I completely forgot the salt!! How could I have done that?
Here's hoping everything else in your fab recipe can overcome my absent-mindedness, Kaylyn!
So glad you enjoyed them!
These are so, so good. Thank you, Kalyn.
Kimmie, you're welcome and wishing you good luck with the diet.
Those look so yummy it isn't even funny. I've been stalking around your blog reading up on recipes and getting ideas. I convinced half of the people I know to start SB tomorrow. Thanks for having such a fab resource up for us to use!
I have never cooked with chipotle, nor do I have any on me. I've had it at Subway on a sandwich before though, lol.
Since I am making this today I thik I will just use paprika instead.
I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the recipe! I was craving deviled eggs and knew your blog must have a recipe on here and I was right.
BurchCo, so glad you liked them. Hmm, now I'm thinking of making some myself.
Just whipped up a batch of these. Yum, yum, and yum! I can see why you ate them before the photo was even off your camera. They really are delicious. I especially like the tang. I usually have to add white vinegar on top of the yellow mustard to get them as tangy as I like, but that lime juice worked beautifully to bring out that flavor! Thanks for the recipe. Definitely a keeper.
Thanks Kalyn
I will try it out
They look fab will let you know how it goes.
I’m sure the chipotle peppers will work, but I’d be careful to dice them as finely as possible so the chipotle flavor gets spread throughout the mixture. (And of course you know to use them sparingly!)
Kalyn
Those eggs look fantastic I think I will make them this week Planning on use chipotle peppers instead of the powder what do you think?
Cheers
Thewe do sound devilishly good Kalyn and perfect for the LiveSytong event. You even have the bracelet in your photo. Good for you for supporting such a great cause:D
YUM! These sound so delicious!
this sounds great I can’t wait to try it!!
Those are some lovely-looking stuffed eggs you got there, Kalyn. Beautiful!
Ate them before you got the pictures up, aah, the devil made you do it! Think I would have done the same too, they look scrumptious.
I love that little tanggy taste and heat to cut the richness in yolk. What a great idea!
Seriously, these sound delicious. I adore deviled eggs and I am making these!
These sound absolutely perfect! I tried the pesto deviled eggs you have listed a while back, and have been wanting to try different flavors since then. This one is saved!
YUM! Those look so good! I’ve never been a deviled egg person, but lately I’ve been thinking they might be pretty tasty!
These look, and sound, DELICIOUS. I’m a big fan of devilled eggs from waaay back.
My wife, not as much. I might have to do some begging, but the recipe is unique enough I bet I can convince her to try them.
Great post!
This looks really good! Love the photography 😉
I can’t remember ever having a deviled egg. They look good and sound tasty. I like the sound of the chipotle in them. Bookmarked to try.
Looks delicious!
Paz
I love devilled eggs, though I have only made them once since starting my blog. A pity, when there are so many good variations. I will have to try this! You really do have a way with eggs.
Ah, what a brilliant combination! I want to eat some now. 🙂
Lydia, when I was researching for my post about how to make hard boiled eggs I learned that fresh eggs are harder to peel. Once the eggs are a little older, the white membrane separates from the shell a little, making them easier to peel. Who knew?
Yummy, I love deviled eggs and I am going to try this with some chipotle peppers I have frozen in adobo.
I won’t be able to eat but one though, dieting, and that will be hard.
I have found with my computer problems I can’t participate in events very often. Sometimes I can’t even read or comment certain blogs. Maybe someday if I upgrade.
Mmmm, love deviled eggs and now totally craving them. These look delicious, Kalyn!
I have never tried deviled eggs, Kalyn – these look wonderful!
I’ve also heard that you shouldn’t use very fresh eggs for deviled eggs. Why is that?
I echo the kudos to your for incorporating the wristband. As for the deviled eggs, thiscould come in handy post-Greek Easter when eggs abound, waiting to be eaten up.
Fabulous–and I’m glad I still have time to do this!
This recipe sounds fabulous…I’m such a fan of deviled eggs, and now you’ve got me craving them. Yum!
What a great recipe for such a worthwhile event. I love the use of chipotle chili and lime. Great tang and spice.
Time for lunch and now I’m craving devilled eggs:) They look and sound delicious. Thanks for supporting LiveSTRONG With A Taste Of Yellow.
LiveSTRONG! I am not a big fan of boiled eggs, but this might convert me ^_^
