Five Fun Things on Friday (10-29-10)
Fun Thing #1: My Food Photo on The Oprah Winfrey Show!
Fun Thing #2: My Friend Lydia Featured in Yankee Magazine
Fun Thing #3: Vote for Ben McAdams for State Senate!
You may be wondering why I’m giving a political endorsement on my food blog, where I never talk about politics, but you’ll see why I’m making an exception when I tell you that Utah State Senator Ben McAdams was one of my students when I taught elementary school! Now Ben is running for re-election, and if you live in Salt Lake Senate District #2, I hope you’ll support him. I remember Ben as one of those bright, charismatic, and thoughtful students that everyone loved, so I’m not really surprised to see he ended up in politics. And maybe he’ll Google himself and find that his former teacher has given him an endorsement; wouldn’t that be fun?
Fun Thing #4: Lots of Pumpkin Recipes at BlogHer.com!
Many of you know that besides writing this blog I also write a feature called Weekend Menu Planning for BlogHer.com, where each weekend I suggest seasonal things to cook. All during October I’ve been spotlighting pumpkin recipes, so if you’re thinking about making something with pumpkin for Halloween or Thanksgiving, check them out:
Savory Pumpkin Recipes for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner
Pumpkin Recipes for Cupcakes, Cookies, Cakes, Bread, or Muffins
Twenty More Pumpkin Sweets for Halloween Treats.
Fun Thing #5: How to Increase Your Metabolism
I read a huge number of blogs through Google Reader, and one that I’ve been following for a while is AskGeorgie.com, where a registered dietician named Georgie Fear shares recipes and answers questions from readers. Today Georgie answered “How Can I Boost my Metabolism” in a well-written post that seems very timely as we enter into the season of indulgent eating. Go read it, and I’m betting you’ll learn something!
Okay, those are five fun things from this week for me, so now it’s your turn to share. Let us know in the comments if you’ve spotted anything especially fun this week while you’ve been cruising around the web! If you need just a little more Friday Fun, you can use the label for Five Fun Things on Friday to see fun things I’ve shared on other Fridays!

Doodles, that's fun. I'm not sure where they used my photo, but I guess it will be on the DVD or promos for the show.
Better yet next time you are in New Mexico go to Hatch, NM. Driving thru this very poor town is amazing during drying and roasting season. BTW saw the Oprah show before your blog notice and saw Kaylyns Kitchen in the credits………said to my husband I know that woman. Too Cool!!
Donna, I have been to Santa Fe, but not during chile roasting season. I'd love to do that!
i love Fridays, and one of my new reasons is your "Fun Things." I am a big fan!
Promise me that someday you will go to Santa Fe New mexico. You must go to the Farmer's Market there – where they roast Hatch chiles in a large metal cylinder over an open fire. The tastes and smells are incredible!
Donna
Hi Georgie,
My pleasure. That was a great post!
Thanks so much Kalyn! I'm honored to make your list!!!!!
Yes, we are heading into indulgent season! 🙂
Thanks as always for your great posts and recipes!
Georgie Fear RD
Hi Wanda,
Me too! Most of those tips are things I try to do already, but it's always good to have a little nudge.
Hi Kalyn: just returning from attending 3 delicious Canadian Thanksgivings in Toronto. All that food means I really really needed to see your #5 Friday tip about increasing Metabolism. Thanks…I will follow her advice.
Wanda
JungleFrog, thanks! Not sure they will even mention my name, but still fun to have one of my photos featured.
O how cool that you will be featured on Oprah! I'm sure it will run years later here, but anyway… still cool!
Val, so true. Funny how life happens like that sometimes.
Lydia, it is pretty funny isn't it? Congrats again on the Yankee Magazine article.
Elaine, thank you. I'm not sure if it will turn out to be that exciting, but I'll definitely be watching.
Brian, fun to hear from a fellow blogger who lives in Utah.
I think that is so cool that you are going to get recognition from the Oprah show – That should be great for you and your blog.
You know, we are actually neighbors, I also live in Salt Lake City, UT.
Take care,
Brian M Connole
I love your Friday Fun Things, Kalyn. I'm dying to know about the Oprah shot. I'll be watching!
Thank you so much for sharing the news about Drop In & Decorate, *and* for sharing your exciting news about Oprah. I'll be watching and cheering here in Rhode Island! (Cheering for a photo? Why not?!)
So many things to celebrate all in one post!!!!!
Paula, thanks. I'll be watching for sure!
Can't wait to watch Oprah on Wednesday and see what in the world you are talking about. 🙂
