Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Onion Goggles
If you’re bothered by burning, itching, or watering eyes when you chop onions, you really need to try these amazing onion goggles! I promise that for everyone whose eyes are sensitive to onions, Onion Googles will be a game-changer!
PIN the Onion Goggles to remember them later!
I confess that for most of my life I was a bit of an onion-chopping snob. My eyes never seemed to bother me much when I chopped onions and I figured anyone who was bothered by the onion fumes had to be a bit of a wimp.
It wasn’t until I had eye surgery and no longer needed contact lenses that I realized that it was the contacts that kept the onion fumes out of my eyes all those years! Suddenly I could hardly chop an onion without my eyes burning and stinging. What is a food blogger to do?
Luckily I remember hearing about Onion Goggles (affiliate link), and after about my second or third time trying to chop onions with my newly improved eyes I ordered a pair of Onion Googles from Amazon.com. And it was life-changing for me. I didn’t mind wearing them, and I could chop away without my eyes stinging or burning even the slightest bit!
I’m now a committed wearer of these amazing goggles that keep the onion fumes out of your eyes, and I decided I adore them so much that I should make them one of my featured kitchen picks, where I recommend products I’d happily buy over and over again.
Why are Onion Goggles so great?
Onion Goggles fit close to your eyes and have a foam layer around them so the onion fumes can’t get in, and they make an incredible difference when you’re chopping onions, especially when you’re chopping quite a few onions at once. And they’re inexpensive and easy to use!
Recipes where I would definitely use my Onion Goggles:
I’d use my onion googles in any recipe where I had to chop an onion, but especially for recipes like Air Fryer Peppers and Onions or Roasted Vidalia Onions with Parmesan where you’re chopping several onions for a recipe.
Blogger Disclosure:
I bought the goggles shown in the photo above myself from Amazon.com and the company has no idea I am writing about their product. All items featured as Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks are things I will happily buy over and over, and because I want readers to know that my opinions are completely unbiased, I no longer accept sample products of any kind. You can use Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks to see more kitchen products I’ve purchased and loved!

SAME thing happened to me! I had lasik and then couldn't chop onions without tears. My husband makes fun of me and I dare him to try it without contacts!
I received a pair as a stocking stuffer from my husband a couple of Christmas' ago and they have gotten so much use. Love them!
It happens to me too. My eyes burn like crazy when I'm not wearing my contacts. These goggles are clever! I bet they'd make a fun gift too.
Anne, aren't they great!
I totally own a pair! And yep, I use 'em. :O)

I can't remember which cooking instructor told this to me, but it's always worked.
Don't open your mouth while chopping onions.
The olive oil onion candle my friend gave me works, too.
But nothing like just keeping my mouth closed. (which is pretty hard for me)
Haha this reminds me of the story Jamie Oliver told about his first job chopping onions in a restaurant. He came into work with a face mask and snorkel and started chopping. Said it worked but he looked a bit funny. *snort*
Very fun hearing all the different ways people cope with chopping onions. And I'm glad I can introduce a few people to onion goggles. I'm sold on them.
How funny! If I wore goggles whilst chopping food, I'm pretty sure my youngest grandson would run away screaming that grandma had turned into an alien!
I rarely chop onions by hand. Gave that up ages ago when I purchased an inexpensive mini food processor for that very chore. It works like a charm when I only need a small amount of onion or peppers. If I need a lot of onions, I use my large food processor to do the chopping. If I need sliced onions, I use my trusty old V slicer. The V slicer, even at 20 odd years old, is so fast, there's no time for fumes to reach my eyes.
These are such a great idea…thanks for the review 🙂
I still adore my onion goggles and keep them out on my counter — that's how often I used them. Thanks for the link, Kalyn!
This post is so funny. I remember when I was a kid, I loved eating onions and vaguely remember trying a snorkeling mask while cutting…I don't recall it helping much.
If anyone is looking for a (nearly) free solution that doesn't make you look silly, (1) try placing your cutting board as close to a burner as possible while lit (the burner, not you!) The flames burn off much of the oil in the air saving your eyes. …sorry, electric range owners 🙁
(2) Cutting as a chef would (YouTube – Gordon Ramsay: How to Chop an Onion) keeps the onion pretty much intact until the last moment, which should reduce upward misting.
(3) Along with a sharp knife – which slices more than it squeezes – you'll probably be fine.
I call this the Onion Chopping Trinity and since implementation has produced tearless results…for me. Maybe goggles are the only hope, Obi Wan Kenobi.
I am one of those Onion Wimps! I have always wondered if onion goggles really work, and now I know – will be ordering asap!
wow, i'd never heard of 'onion goggles' … hehe, all the interesting stuff people invent these days! 😀
i've always used my swimming goggles that i keep in the pantry. if that's not handy i keep my mango-coconut aroma candle jar burning beside while chopping onions – no tears, only fragrance in the house 😀
Never had problems with onions until I was pregnant. Suddenly even the mildest onions made me tear up and it never went away. I LOVE my onion goggles… I figure they're worth the price in trips to the ER saved from trying to chop onions while crying!
I remember the first time one of my students wore these to a cooking class. The rest of us laughed and laughed — until we started to chop onions. Then, we were crying and that student was laughing!
I haven't used them for horseradish, but I'm guessing they will help on anything that has fumes that bother your eyes.
Hi Kalyn!
Should these work for horseradish as well?
Fun hearing from so many onion goggle fans. Thanks for sharing some other ideas too.
I have used my husband's motorcycle goggles before….works great. Another trick I use is to put a chopping board on the stove and turn the fan on high. The fan sucks up the fumes or juice or whatever it is that bothers my eyes. Works every time. Just another option 🙂
I hope my entire comments shows up. On the review it didn't for some reason. Anyway, onions are a funny thing for me. Sometimes I cry and sometimes I don't and I have no idea what the difference is. I know these goggles would be the perfect solution for those times when I put my knife down in disgust and my recipe ends up shy of the onions that didn't get chopped.

I too love these. I got mine at Sur la Table. I gave a pair to a friend who makes lots of relishes containing mountains of sliced onion. She initially thought I'd lost my mind. She had used swim goggles in the past. Then she tried the onion goggles and was hooked. I have been praised ever since. They are so much better than swim goggles. Now I wish they made them with a little correction so I could see the onion better. 🙂
I've had my pair pf green onion googles for almost three years now. They are probably the most used thing in my kithen. Everyone laughed at me when I bought them but they don't cook as much as me or chop up enough onions to sometimes feed up to 50 people at one time.
When my niece was 4 years old she suggested wearing goggles while chopping onions after seeing us cry. She is now 13.
I do think you will love them if you have a problem with onions bothering your eyes!
Ohhhhh! I need these. I am adding to my Amazon.com wishlist right now. Thanks for the post 🙂
