Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Onion Goggles

Onion Goggles
No more tears or burning eyes when you peel onions!

I confess that for most of my life I was a bit of an onion-chopping snob.  My eyes never seemed to bother me when I chopped onions and I figured anyone who was bothered by the onion fumes had to be a bit of a wimp.  It wasn’t until late last year when I had eye surgery and no longer needed contact lenses that I realized that it was the contacts that kept the onion fumes out of my eyes all those years!  Suddenly I could hardly chop an onion without my eyes burning and stinging.  What is a food blogger to do?

Luckily I remember hearing about Onion Goggles, and after about my second or third time trying to chop onions with my newly improved eyes I ordered a pair from Amazon.com.  The onion googles fit close to your eyes and have a foam layer around them so the onion fumes can’t get in, and they make an incredible difference, especially if you’re chopping quite a few onions at once.  I am now a committed wearer of onion goggles, and I decided I adore them so much that I should make them one of my Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks, where I recommend products I’d happily buy over and over again.

I bought the onion goggles shown above myself from Amazon.com and the company has no idea I am writing about their product.  All items featured as Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks are things I will happily buy over and over, and because I want readers to know that my opinions are completely unbiased, I no longer accept sample products of any kind.   (However, if you do follow the link above and buy some onion goggles from Amazon, Kalyn’s Kitchen does earn a few cents on the dollars from that transaction; thanks!)

  1. SAME thing happened to me! I had lasik and then couldn't chop onions without tears. My husband makes fun of me and I dare him to try it without contacts!

  2. I received a pair as a stocking stuffer from my husband a couple of Christmas' ago and they have gotten so much use. Love them!

  3. It happens to me too. My eyes burn like crazy when I'm not wearing my contacts. These goggles are clever! I bet they'd make a fun gift too.

  4. Anne, aren't they great!

  5. I totally own a pair! And yep, I use 'em. :O)

  6. I can't remember which cooking instructor told this to me, but it's always worked.

Don't open your mouth while chopping onions.

The olive oil onion candle my friend gave me works, too.

But nothing like just keeping my mouth closed. (which is pretty hard for me)
