Weekend Herb Blogging #61 Recap and Holiday Announcements

Sunday is here, time to recap the tasty dishes people have been cooking and blogging about for Weekend Herb Blogging, where we have fun learning more about herbs, plants, veggies, or flowers each week. Next weekend will be the last Weekend Herb Blogging of the year, hosted by What’s Cooking in Carolina.

Then starting December 11 there’s going to be a special Holiday Cooking with Herbs event. We invite you to share one or more of your special holiday recipes with us anytime between December 11-23. You can post any recipe that features herbs, plants, veggies, or flowers, and we’re hoping people will share holiday recipes that they might only cook at this time of the year. On December 24 I’ll post the recap of recipes for others to try during the following week. (I’ll be visiting my sister and these cute kids for some of that week so I may be having a little blogging break.) Later, I’ll add Holiday Cooking with Herbs as a permanent link to my sidebar where the WHB stuff is collected.

Also related to the holidays, we hope you’ll join the fundraising efforts for The Menu For Hope, either by donating a prize or purchasing virtual raffle tickets to win prizes donated by other bloggers. Follow the link to get more information about this campaign, which also starts December 11.

First Vaishali from Happy Burp encourages us to guess what two unsual looking ingredients are, and then she uses them to make a most unusual and delicious-looking chutney. Could you have guessed it?

Genie, The Inadvertent Gardener harvests the very last of her sage to use for Thanksgiving stuffing, and she’s very excited about starting a new tradition, picking fresh sage on Thanksgiving.

From My Creative Ideas, Pooja is sending us a delicious sounding recipe for Palak Pulao or Spinach Pulao. With lots of good veggies and a bit of spice too, this recipe sounds very interesting.

It was a dark and stormy night when she made it, but Indian Rice Pudding with Cardomom made Glenna feel better. Head over to A Fridge Full of Food to see how great this looks.

I often see recipes that look good on The Cooking Adventures of Chef Paz, but this Portabella Mushroom Salad with Parsley really made me do a double take. Mushrooms, red onions, herbs, and balsamic vinegar sounds like a fabulous combination to me.

Happy birthday to Sher from What Did You Eat, and happy new camera too! If you look at her photos of Mexican Black Bean Soup with Sausage, you’ll see she was already doing a very nice job with her old camera. Sher and I have the same tastebuds, not to mention the cilantro gene, so I know this would taste fantastic.

Next is a very innovative recipe from Gattina. I haven’t used fresh marjoram too much, but I really like the sound of her Clam Salad with Marjoram, and her post has great photos too.

One thing I love about Weekend Herb Blogging is the unusual recipes people submit, and this next recipe from Anh of Food Lover’s Journey sounds delightfully unusual. Anh says be sure to use the freshest ingredients for the dish of Chicken Soup with Pineapple and Bitter Gourd.

This next dish is something Lakshmi from Flavors of Indian Rasoi says is good for a cold, and it sounds like a lovely spicy combination. Mirayala Charu or Black Pepper Rasam is good with rice, or it can be eaten alone as a soup.

Bloomington, U.S.A.
Burcu from Almost Turkish Recipes comes next with an interesting dish called Tomato Soup with Greek Noodle Nexts or Yunan Sehriye Toplu Domates Corbasi. If you don’t know what noodle nests are, head over to Burcu’s blog and check it out.

Longview, Washington, U.S.A.
Chrispy from Experimentation of Taste has been distracted from cooking by a freak snowstorm plus the flu, but she still managed to make a delicious sounding Beet Risotto. She’s also searching for a pasta sauce recipe using carrots; if anyone has any ideas leave them in a comment.

Mill Valley, California, U.S.A.
If you’re not familiar with Sunchokes, head over to Anna’s Cool Finds where Anna will teach you a lot about this plant which is native to North America. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten Sunchokes, also called Jerusalem Artichokes, but Anna’s Sunchoke Gratin sounds like a good way to try them.

Haalo from Cook (almost) Anything At Least Once always makes interesting and yummy looking creations, and this time she tackles cauliflower, lamenting that some people can’t warm up to it. Haalo’s delicious looking deep-fried Cauliflower Pakoras should win over everyone to try this tasty vegetable.

Next from the never-boring Ilva of Lucullian Delights comes a fascinating idea of making your own herb salt. Ilva combines five wonderful herbs with salt, and shows us some of her fabulous photos of the finished product too.

Heart of the Vendee, France
Lots more herbs in the next post where Kate from Thyme for Cooking, the Blog shows us how she makes Roast Chicken with Herbs. Everything about this looks good, especially the wonderful herb sauce that Kate serves with the chicken; don’t miss it!

As I told Jayashree from Spice and Curry in my comment, I really admire anyone who can make curry from scratch, and this version of Zucchini and Capsicum Curry sounds just delicious. There’s some good information about Zucchini in this post, and a great photo of the finished dish.

More yumminess comes from Virginie of Absolutely Green, who gives us the recipe in French and English both in the same post this time, so scroll down if your French isn’t that great. Virginie is making Rooibos tea and Hibiscus Flower Jelly, and shows us a lovely photo of the finished jelly.

My own post this week featured sage, and a recipe for Turkey or Chicken Lasagna with Sage and Three Cheeses that I think might be my all-time-favorite way to use leftover turkey. I also give some links to a few other sage recipes that caught my eye.

If you’re astute, you may have noticed that herb blogging regular Anna from Morsels and Musings is missing this week.
