Make Cheese Sandwiches, Not War.

If you’ve been camping up in the mountains or off on a beach somehwere all weekend and missed all the uproar about cheese sandwiches and why so many food bloggers are making cheese sandwiches on Thursday, you may not realize how ironic it is I had a hard time thinking of what to write about for Weekend Herb Blogging this week. Gee, it was my simple confession that herb blogging required a bit more creativity when no herbs were available that led Pete Wells to decide he somehow had the right to label this a boring blog. My blog isn’t boring, it’s honest.

Before we get to the herbs, let me make a tiny little announcement about next weekend. Since it’s President’s Day weekend in the U.S., and since a long-time friend is coming to visit me, I’d like to move the posting of the WHB Recap to Monday night for next week. Hey, it will give some of you an extra day to post something if you’re so inclined.

Panama, Republic of Panama Chef Melissa, the Cooking Diva, is off visiting Equador and the Galapagos Islands this weekend, lucky woman, but she sent her post in early about mangos, called the apple of the tropics. Melissa shares some wonderful sounding mango recipes and instructions on how to cut mangos, and also also gives us a heads up about a great site called Global Voices where she also has been writing about mangos.

Brussels, Belgium Andreea from Glorious Food and Wine is dealing with cold, wet weather in Brussels, but staying home inspires her to do a bit of research into the origins and uses of ginger. She vows to make something healthy with her ginger, and she shares the recipe for an incredible sounding dish of Steamed White Fish with sesame, wine, garlic, ginger and onion.

Toronto, Canada Over at Once Upon a Feast, Ruth has been busy organizing her recipes by category, and she has a lot of recipes! Still she managed to share three recipes using herbs, Herb and Three Cheese Penne, Spicy Mango Coleslaw, and Lime Roasted Sweet Potatoes. Yum.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, U.S.A. A new herb blogger this week is Karina, one of my great blog friends from Recipes From a Gluten Free Goddess, whose husband came home with two batches of fresh basil (in February, in Massachusetts!) They used the basil to make Steve’s Favorite Basil Pesto, which Karina gives us the recipe for, along with lots of great idea for using pesto.

Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy Another great couple of photos from the always stunning blog Lucullian Delights where Ilva serves up some cicoria, a type of salad greens which can be eaten raw or cooked. Ilva reports that some Italians use them in soups, or braise them with olive oil, but she used hers to make a simple cheese sandwich with some delicious Fontina and crusty bread.

New York City, New York, U.S.A. More cooking and photography talent is being displayed at the Cooking Adventures of Chef Paz, where Paz has been a busy woman this week. Luckily she found time to make her wonderful looking Crab and Corn Chowder with the aromatic herbs of cilantro, basil, tarragon, and parsley.

Farmgirl’s Farm, Missouri, U.S.A. When I saw this next post on Farmgirl Fare, I was green with envy that Susan is already starting seeds out there on the farm in Missouri. If you want great information about starting seeds, from a real farmer, be sure to read all the comments on this fascinating post.

New York City, New York, U.S.A. Another stunning photo shows up at In Mol Araan, where The Chocolate Lady makes magic with interesting ingredients. This time she is cooking up Braised Chard Stems with Oregano and Chile, which sounds just amazing. Of course if you have chard stems, you should use the leaves to make Frittata with Dill and Chard, just like the Chocolate Lady did!

Texas, U.S.A. Over at Heather’s Space, Heather is still not growing plants outside either, but she is looking ahead to summer like me. At least it’s warm enough there for her to venture outside for a little gardening activity dividing African Violets, which looks like a nice way to spend some time outside.
San Francisco Wine Country, California, U.S.A. Another new herb blogger this week is B’gina from Stalking the Waiter who writes about the uses of rosemary, especially in making biga, a type of focaccia she uses as a pizza crust. She also shares a delightful photo of a bee on her rosemary plant.

Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A. In Salt Lake, my only source of plant life is the grocery store, where I picked up some fresh asparagus and used it to make Warm Salmon and Asparagus Salad. And yes, just in case anyone out there does care (unlike Pete Wells) I had it for lunch yesterday.

  6. Hey Kalyn, sorry I could not take part in this week’s WHB as I’ve not had the chance to cook at all this weekend. But this gives me time to think about next week’s! Interesting round up as usual.

    Now off to dinner because reading all these really made me hungry.
