RESTAURANT REQUEST: Mediterranean Food

A friend has asked me to give ideas about what to order in a restaurant if you’re doing the South Beach Diet, or another low carb plan. I promised her I would feature that idea in a post every now and then, working my way through the restaurants that have become some of my favorites since I’ve been eating the lower carb way.

If I had to pick a favorite restaurant in Salt Lake, my current one is probably Cafe Med. It’s a small, locally owned place featuring mediterranean foods, expecially Greek, Persian, and Turkish dishes. They have a lot of South Beach Diet friendly choices and also an excellent selection of vegetarian dishes. Here are a couple of the lower carb choices that I particularly like:

  • Salad Shirazi: fresh diced tomato, cucumber and onions in a lemon herb dressing
  • Kabob-e Kubideh: highly seasoned ground beef kabob. It comes with salad and rice and I ask for all salad and no rice.
  • Chicken Souvlaki: Chicken kabob seasoned with lemon, oregano and garlic. Again, when I order this I get extra salad and no rice.
  • American Greek Salad: This is a salad with lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, onions, peperoncini, and feta cheese. It’s called American Greek salad because in Greece this type of salad wouldn’t have lettuce, and the Greek version would probably have green pepper.
All of those are good choices, but here’s exactly what I order about 90% of the time I visit Cafe Med: American Greek Salad with no onions, blue cheese dressing instead of Greek, extra feta cheese and a side of Gyro meat. I also get some Tzatziki sauce on the side for the meat. Yum, yum, yum. This never fails to leave me deliriously happy.

  1. Great ideas! You always get my mouth watering!
Love the photos! Too bad they aren’t scratch and sniff…and taste, too!

  2. Sounds absolutely delicious. I don’t live in Salt Lake, but I do have a good Greek restaurant in my neighborhood where I can get something similar to this.
