Kalyn’s Kitchen Turns 12 Years Old!

Today I’m celebrating 12 years of Kalyn’s Kitchen with a question for all my faithful readers! And it’s been so much fun sharing recipes with you for 12 wonderful years; thanks for all the support!

Today Kalyn’s Kitchen is turning 12 years old, can you even believe it? I absolutely never imagined that happening or how blogging would impact my life when I wrote this humble little post 12 years ago today. I’ve shared the story about how I lost 42 Pounds and Became a Food Blogger many times, so I won’t repeat those details again, but what a life lesson this blog has been about how if you just keep working at something it can turn out to be so much more than you ever imagined!

Twelve years have brought so many changes in blogging and this blog that I couldn’t begin to list them all, but one thing that hasn’t ever changed is how absolutely rewarding it is when someone tells me how my recipes are helping them to eat healthier meals, lose weight, or control their blood sugar without having to give up delicious food. And this blog would never have lasted 12 years without the wonderful people who visit here often, and that support from readers means the world to me.

Along the blogging journey my personal way of eating has changed from a strict South Beach Diet approach to one that’s more focused on carb-conscious eating in general, and the blog has evolved into a site that features carb-conscious recipes for every type of diet.

And more changes are coming in the fall of 2017! I’m on the waiting list with a web designer who’s created some of the most popular food sites on the web for some big blog updates. That means I’m finally going to take the plunge, switch to WordPress, and add lots of new functionality to Kalyn’s Kitchen that I hope my readers will really like!

Fellow bloggers will understand what a big deal it is to change blogging platforms after 12 years, but for readers who don’t know much about the mechanics of blogging, you can be sure that I’ll do my best to keep the parts of the blog that work well now, while adding features that will make it easier to use and more professional looking.

Which brings me to the question I’d like to ask of everyone who’s reading this:

If you could change one thing about Kalyn’s Kitchen,
what would you want to change, and why?

Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance for your feedback to help me improve Kalyn’s Kitchen for you. And THANK YOU again to everyone who has helped make this blogging journey so rewarding and fulfilling for me. Blogging has enriched my life in countless ways, and I am grateful every day for all the blog helpers, blogging friends, readers, and family members who have been a part of that. And even though occasionally people ask when I am going to actually retire, right now I’m looking forward to happily sharing recipes for many years to come.

  1. I'm about to do a "deep dive" into your recipes as I try to eat healthier and avoid some foods (including some that I truly love.) It's too early in the process for me to say if there is anything more I'd like to see on the site – for the moment, I can only say bravo for the site and thanks for being such an inspiration on many levels.

  2. Happy Blogiversary! I love your site and your delicious recipes! If anything, I'd like to be able to favorite or bookmark recipes for future reference and maybe see what other people with similar taste have faved. Full menu ideas for dinner parties? Have you considered coming out with a hard copy book with all your illustrations? Thank you so much for all your hard work, it's made my life and my family's life better!

    • You could use the site Yummly (which I have the button for up at the top) to save recipes to a recipe box, which might work the way you're describing. I did do one post of full menus for dinners for Valentine's day, and truthfully it was a lot of work and didn't get much attention. And no plans to spend what precious free time I have writing a book; I work on the site 6-8 hours nearly every day. Never say never, but so far I have not been able to convince myself to do that! Thanks for the vote of confidence though!

  3. I have no input on what to change. I want to say happy anniversary! I love your blog and whenever I get stumped it's the first place I go and whenever anyone is looking for healthy delicious recipes it's the first place I link to them! Thank you for all the time and energy you put into your blog!

  4. Honestly, your blog is my favorite food site on the www. Our family loves your recipes and I love that they are good for me, health wise. Maybe a few more carb-conscious desserts? THANK YOU for all you have done! May you live and blog forever!

  5. I love your site! The only thing I can think of to change is how the search results display. With the sponsor ad sites results posting first, it's confusing. I'm only interested in seeing your recipes here–or at least I'd like to see them first.

    • Julie, I wish that was possible. Unfortunately having those ads there makes the use of the Google Search Engine for the site free to me and I can't change the placement of the ads.. I experimented with the paid one (without ads) but it was really $$$ and didn't give as good of results.

  6. Your recipes have had a big impact on my diet. I love how I can search by ingredient and always come up with something delicious that's easy to prepare. The one change I would love to see is the addition of calories per serving. That would be huge for those of us who use trackers like My Fitness Pal. I don't need full nutritional info, just that.

If I could make a magic wish and get anything I want, I would wish for your recipes to have a QR code embedded in them that I could just scan so it would all auto-populate into my phone (ingredient list to take with me to the store, nutrition details for tracking apps, etc).

Thanks so much for your great work!

  7. Congratulations Kalyn on 12 impressive years!! I think you need more Instant Pot recipes 🙂

  8. I love your recipes and try them on my husband all the time! Maybe adding a daily or weekly diet plan of your own would be a good next step. Monday breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, etc.

    • Thanks Cynthia! I am not sure I can do that, I can barely keep up with the weekly schedule as it is. But maybe occasional menus like the one I did for Valentine's Day this year.

  9. Congratulations Kalyn! I've been following you since the days of the old Prevention South Beach message boards! I love your recipes, and have used many as a springboard to develop my own favorites as well. I wouldn't want you to change a thing!!

  10. For 12 years you have been a shining light in the blog world, and a model for many thousands of bloggers who came after (including me). Thank you for all you do, for all you have done, and for having the courage to keep changing and growing your blog.

  11. Keep doing what you are doing!!

  12. I'm a longtime reader, and have recently been eating much less meat. I'd love it if your great bean recipes were better accessible in a vegetarian section. I love your Amy's white chili (and always make it meatless) along with your lentil picadillo recipes.

    • Glad you have enjoyed the recipes. I hadn't thought about that for the green beans recipes, but you can always type green beans into the search bar and see them all!

  13. We have followed your blog for years, thank you for making healthy eating accessible! More instant pot conversions would be greatly appreciated!

  14. Hi Kalyn,
I enjoy your recipes and blog as it is. If anything please add some more InstantPot Whole 30 or Paleo recipes Thanks so much

  15. I can't think of a thing. Happy 12th blogiversary! I've made many of your recipes multiple times. Thank you for blogging.

  16. Not a thing. You do a great job!

  17. I always enjoy your site, and look forward to reading about the new recipes you are developing. It would be great if you could add a picture to the printed recipe. Anne

    • Thanks Anne! I am pretty sure that's something that can happen pretty easily in the new design, but it will take a while before all the recipes get changed over to the recipe plug-in. Thanks!

    • This is also the one change I would like. I'm a visual person, and find it helpful to have a picture with the recipe as I'm preparing it, or looking through my files later as I decide what to cook.

Your recipes and your narratives are great. Since I have no plans to acquire an Instant Pot, I appreciate your continuing to show alternative cooking methods; also appreciate your pointing out for which particular diets (SB, paleo, etc) each recipe is appropriate, and how to adapt. It's also helpful when you suggest possible accompanying dishes to make a meal.

I can only imagine the amount of thought and care you put into your work, and I thank you!

    • Definitely I am hoping to have that as an option for the new design, thanks Winanne!

  18. I love your blog! I have tried so many of the recipes, and they are always delicious. I would love to see nutritional information included with the recipes.

    • Susan, that it something I am definitely considering with the new design. But to be honest, it's hard to start down that path since I have nearly 2,000 past recipes and I feel like once I add it to a recipe people will expect to see it on every recipe. And that is months and months of work. But I am definitely considering it!

    • Alot of diet tracking apps (such as My Fitness Pal) will figure out nutritional info for you as long as ingredients are entered. You can manually enter or upload from a website. I've tried with yours (because I love your blog) but it doesn't pull well from the blog format. If the ingredients list could be made to pull for those types of apps, that could be a great compromise!

    • This is one thing that will definitely be improved with the new design. WordPress will allow the use of a recipe plug-in that has behind-the-scenes info to identify recipe ingredients for Google and for Apps like you are describing. Unfortunately, every recipe has to be converted by hand. I will hire someone to do it, but it won't happen immediately after the site is re-designed. This is one of the biggest reasons I'm changing to WordPress, to be able to use a recipe plug-in!

    • Glad to hear it. that is the only change I wish for.

    • Just to be clear, that process is not automatic. So it could be months and months before all the recipes are switched to the plug-in. But definitely planning to do it, or possibly hire someone to do it.

  19. Happy blogiversary!

  20. I am a diet controlled diabetes 2. Always looking for more low GI meals. ?
