Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Whole Grain Flat-Out Flatbread with Flax

Whole Grain Flatout FlatbreadA few weeks ago I wrote about using this Flatout Multi-Grain Flatbread to make South Beach Diet Friendly Flatbread Pizza. Since then I’ve been loving this flatbread so much I decided it belongs in Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks, the collection of products I love and rave about on the blog. And I do love this flatbread, and not only because it’s made with 100% stone ground whole wheat, has lots of fiber, very little fat or sugar, and is loaded with other healthful ingredients like flax seed and whole grains. Of course the flatbread makes delicious pizza (why aren’t you already in the kitchen making some?) but it’s got lots of other uses. This flatbread is becoming a standard item in my freezer, so I thought I’d share a few ideas I had for using it.

~Serve flatbread on the side when you make Lamb Souvlaki, Pork Souvlaki or Chicken Souvlaki.

~Use the flatbread to dip up some Cilantro Salsa Dip.

~Smear the flatbread with Sun-Dried Tomato Spread.

~Serve the flatbread with White Bean and Artichoke Dip.

~Use the flatbread to scoop up Bengali Red Dal Curry.

~Wrap the flatbread around some Baked Falafel Patties.

(Edit – I felt I should clarify that I am spotlighting only the Whole Grain Flatbread with flax, although this company makes several other very good products. You can get more information about Flatout flatbreads at their website. If you’re a South Beach Dieter, be advised that not all their products use whole wheat flour, although many do. Read the label to be sure it says “whole wheat flour.”)

Flatbread Ideas From Other Bloggers:
(Recipes from other blogs may not always be South Beach Diet friendly; check ingredients.)

~Cut each flatbread in half and use to make Roasted Halibut Tacos with Mango Salsa or Pan-Fried Fish Tacos.

~Wrap the flatbread around some Steak Fajitas or Tequila Lime Chicken Fajitas.
~Make some of Alanna’s Mexican Gashouse Eggs, using half a piece of flatbread instead of a flour tortilla.
~How about some Warm Fig, Apple, and Gorgonzola Flatbread.
~Try a Chicken, Hummus, and Red Pepper Flatbread Panini.
~Cut up the flatbread, toast it, and toss it into some Fattoush (Lebanese Veggie Salad.)
~Make toasted flatbread chips and dip into some Black Bean Dip or Cannellini Bean Dip.

  3. I appreciate hearing from people who like this product. However, I can’t let people leave comments recommending other types of flatbread. I hope no one is offended by this, but when I get a comment that recommends a product that’s different than the one I’m talking about, there’s no way for me to know if it’s left by someone who’s a regular reader or by someone who’s a representative of the company making that product. If I let people leave comments like that “advertising” other products or websites where products are sold, my blog will be overwhelmed with those types of comments.

  4. I love Flatouts! They are great for sandwich lovers. I get them in the deli at Walmart and my local grocer for about $2.50 per pack.

  5. We’ve made a few different recipes using the Flat Out wraps… good stuff! They freeze well too. We do in fact get ours from Costco!

  10. I always put waxed paper between the “slices” before a freeze them to make it easier to take out just what I need. I stock up when they are on sale.

  11. Hi Kalyn, love your blog! I get the flatbread at Costco and freeze most of it since you get multiple packages. I usually use it to make quesadillas or breakfast tacos. I also use it to make lunch wraps. BTW, I only recently discovered your blog in early January when I decided to go back on Phase 1 after not having done South Beach in 5 years. What a great resource you have been. Thank you!

  12. I love these flat outs! I discovered them when my husband and I started SB in September. He refused to give up his lunch sandwich and lettuce wraps were not good enough. I use these to wrap up his sandwich. He likes the italian flavor the best. I buy them at SuperTarget.

  14. Thanks to people for sharing where you get them! I was feeling very jealous that my Costco didn’t have them, but then I realized that I never buy bread at Costco, so maybe they’re there and I just missed them. If not I’m going to ask my Costco to carry them.

  15. Thanks for the great ideas! I buy those at Costco and I like to use them to make baked burritos. I put about a cup total of brown rice, black beans, salsa and cheese, fold over the ends and roll it up. Then you just bake it in the oven until the outsides are crispy and serve it with more salsa.

    Christine and Amber, I haven’t seen it at Costco (and no TJ in Utah.) I can find it at Smiths and Albertson’s here, and maybe other stores, but those are the two main grocery stores where I shop. Amber, at my Smiths (Kroger) it’s $3.00 for a pack of 6, and they’re pretty large flatbreads.

  18. Where are you finding this product, and how much are you paying for it? I remember seeing it at Kroger, but I refused to pay the asking price. Have you found a deal?

  21. Your white bean and artichoke dip looks sooo good! I’m going out to eat a lot this week/weekend but I’m going to have to find that recipe!
