Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Triscuits 100% Whole Wheat Crackers for Holiday Parties

These whole-wheat crackers with only 3 ingredients are a healthier holiday nibble.

The season of over-indulgence is upon us, and this year more than ever I’m hoping to enjoy some holiday foods without completely overdoing it on sweets and other treats I’d prefer to avoid.  (I’m guessing lots of you are with me on this, right?)   One way I make things easier on myself during the holidays is by having on hand “diet-legal” foods that are still something of a treat.  I don’t normally eat a lot of crackers, but Triscuits crackers made with 100% whole wheat are something that I’d happily munch on at a holiday gathering.

If you’re trying to stick to an eating plan that avoids white flour, you’ll quickly turn into a label reader.  That’s how I found out that Triscuits are one of the best crackers for South Beach Dieters, containing only “whole grain soft white winter wheat, soybean oil, and salt.”  It’s a definite plus for me that Triscuits don’t contain sugar as so many other whole grain crackers do.  And since woman cannot live on celery sticks alone during the month of December, I’m offering Triscuits as a suggestion for holiday party munching, and making them officially one of my Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks.

Three things I might eat on Triscuits are Hummus, Laughing Cow Spreadable Cheese, or Peanut Butter.  If you’d like something a bit fancier, here are some Triscuit-topping ideas:

  8. I started eating Triscuits when I was doing the South Beach diet and it's one thing that's stayed in my pantry ever since. Great pick!

  10. I love that Triscuits have only three ingredients, but I have never been a big fan of the texture. I'm currently in love with lentil crackers, which I think might be SB-friendly too? But they have a few more ingredients.

  13. oh, and spinach dip is great with thin Triscuits! I make mine with the recipe on the back of the Knorr soup box (and probably on their website); however, to make it yummioer AND healthier, I cut the mayo/dip ingredients in HALF and also DOUBLE the amount of spinach. It is sooo good!

  14. The four cheese Thin Triscuits (triangles) are awesome!! Also whole wheat, just thinner and crispier. My little girl loves them! They are great with hummus.

  16. I do love Triscuits. I'm glad I read this post, because I had previously stopped buying them because they used to have hydrogenated oils. They must have a new recipe now.

  17. Little Fish Girl, sounds like you have a very good plan for making these work for you! And anything that prevents mindless snacking is good!

  18. Ahem. When I first buy the box, I remove the bag and divide all the crackers into snack bags. Then I put them back into the box. This has solved three problems for me:
    1. I am a student, and it's easier to pack my snack when it's already packed.
    2. Having things already counted out makes me want to preserve the little packs and prevents me from taking "just one" cracker out while I'm impatiently waiting for dinner to get done.
    3. It is instant portion-control.

    Also, aside from portion-control for dietary reasons, pre-packaged foods are expensive, and I try not to eat a lot of them because I can't afford to buy a box of whole-wheat crackers every week just to mindlessly snack on them all the time.

    Karen, I can relate to the problem eating them in moderation. I rarely buy crackers, but when I do these are a good choice.

  20. I love Triscuits, especially the "thins." I have a problem eating them in moderation so don't keep them at home anymore. But they are my "go to" cracker if I am buying them for a party or travel or something where I am not going to be sitting home with my hand in the box!
