Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Prepworks Progressive Fresh Herb Keeper (and Ten Favorite Recipes with Fresh Herbs)

Prepworks Progressive Fresh Herb Keeper (and Ten Favorite Recipes with Fresh Herbs) found on KalynsKitchen.com
Keep your fresh herbs much longer in the fridge with this Progressive Fresh Herb Keeper.

Are you a fan of using fresh herbs in cooking?  I love all types of fresh herbs, and for years I’ve been growing basil, parsley, mint, rosemary, thyme, dill, French tarragon, and sage.  But one herb I’ve never had any luck growing (either outside or in my kitchen window herb garden) is cilantro.  And if you’re a cilantro fan you know that fresh cilantro doesn’t keep well in the fridge, which is why I was so excited to discover this Prepworks Progressive Fresh Herb Keeper.  This plastic herb keeper will keep cilantro good in the fridge about 10 days, (and maybe longer but my cilantro doesn’t stay around longer than that!)  You fill the bottom of the herb keeper with water up to the line, snip off the ends off the bunches of cilantro, and push them down into the tube so the ends are in the water.  Of course you can use this for other types of herbs too if you’re not a cilantro fan!

I bought this in the middle of the winter and used it for both mint and parsley when I didn’t have any growing.  And now that I have other herbs growing outside, I always have a bunch of cilantro in the fridge in this herb keeper.  I’m loving this little herb keeper so much I’ve decided to add it to my list of Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks, where I spotlight things I love and would happily buy again.  And just to show you how useful fresh herbs are in cooking, here are a few of my favorite recipes using them.
(You can find lots more recipes for any type of fresh herb by entering the name of the herb in the search bar located in the upper right sidebar.)

Chicken and Avocado Salad with Lime and Cilantro rocked my world, and I still make it often!
Tarragon Shrimp Salad with Celery, Green Onions, and Celery Seed is delicious and easy to make.
Spicy Mexican Slaw with Lime and Cilantro is something I’ve been making for years.
Bulgur Salad with Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Parsley, Mint, and Lemon is similar to Tabbouleh, but there’s less grains and more herbs and veggies.
Summer Tomato Salad with Goat Cheese, Basil Vinaigrette, and Fresh Herbs is a salad I make every summer.
Cucumber Avocado Salad with Tuna, Cilantro, and Lime is a summertime staple at my house.
Marinated Fresh Mozzarella with Herbs can use most any herbs you have on hand, but I’d always want some basil in the mix.

Parsley Hummus with Whole Wheat Pita Chips is one of my favorites with parsley.

Love this Thai-Inspired Ground Turkey Larb Salad with Sriracha, Mint, Cilantro, and Peanuts.
And nothing says summer like basil pesto, and I love this recipe for Sauteed Zucchini with Spinach and Basil Pesto.

  1. Katrina, I think you would like it!

  2. That looks wonderful! I keep my herbs wrapped in paper towels inside a plastic grocery bag – but then forget to check it after a few days. Much better if I can see the herbs:)

  3. Debra, sorry I was reading the comments out of order and just got to yours with the HERB SCISSORS! Love the idea of this, ordering right now. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Kate's mom, I used this for basil once but I think I used the basil within a few days so I don't really know how long it will last in this. But basil doesn't really need to be in the fridge. I've had very good luck with this method of storing basil in water on the counter that I wrote about back in 2010.

  5. Kalyn, what are your suggestions for keeping fresh basil? It turns black in the fridge, but wilts and goes bad outside the fridge. Would this gadget help with basil?

  6. I grow herbs and use them a lot, and I really find herb scissors handy, a big time saver and more my speed than chopping.
    I enjoy your blog, thanks!

  7. Andea, I figure I was wasting at least one bunch of cilantro a week before I got this, so mine has definitely paid for itself!

  8. Cilantro is a really fussy herb to grow isn't it? Mine came back this year, I guess from last year's seeds and hung on until it hit 90 degrees. Although last year when I did plant seed it didn't grow well at all! So we'll be buying it now until it cools down in Dallas, maybe November lol. I could pay for the Herb Keeper a hundred times over with the cilantro that has gotten mushy in the fridge, definitely a great product for me! Thanks, Kalyn 🙂

  9. Thanks Zerrin. I hate it when they go bad too; such a waste!

  10. I definitely need one! I'm a big fan of fresh herbs, I simply squeeze lemon and enjoy even at breakfast. And I hate when I see they are going bad in the fridge. Love all the recipes with fresh herbs you share!

  11. Katie, exactly! I am a fresh herb addict!

  12. What a great invention! I love to cook with herbs too. They add so much flavor and no calories.

  13. Jacki, I was skeptical but it keeps the herbs fresh much better than I imagined.

  14. I've always wondered about these things. I'll have to put it on my Christmas list now!

  15. Lydia, I have some dill growing in my new pots and so far so good.

  16. I have pretty good luck with cilantro, except that it bolts very quickly (and reseeds, which is fun). The herb I can't grow is dill.
