Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Garofalo Organic Whole Wheat Italian Spaghetti

Garofalo Whole Wheat SpaghettiNow that I’m committed to eating foods that are low on the glycemic index, if I’m making pasta I’ll often use low-carb/low-glycemic Dreamfield’s pasta, a product I’ve consistently recommended. I love Dreamfields, which tastes just like regular white flour pasta, but once in a while I find a recipe that specifically calls for whole wheat pasta. Over the last few years, I ‘ve tried a few brands of whole wheat pasta, and frankly, I haven’t ever been impressed.

Then one day I spotted this Garofalo Organic Whole Wheat Spaghetti at Costco. I was a little unsure about buying 8 pounds of whole wheat spaghetti, even though it was a bargain ($10.49 at my Costco.) After looking at the package a few times on different trips to Costco, I ended up being so intrigued by the idea of whole wheat spaghetti from Italy that I bought some.

I can emphatically say this has now become my go-to brand of whole wheat spaghetti for life. I loved the slightly nutty flavor when I used it to make Whole Wheat Sesame Noodles with Spicy Peanut Sauce, and I’ve also used for Spaghetti with Spicy Cherry Tomato Sauce. If you’re one of those people who loves pasta tossed with a bit of butter or olive oil and parmesan, this spaghetti would be fabulous for that. It’s official: I’m choosing Garofalo Organic Whole Wheat Spaghetti as one of Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks. If you live by Costco, go there right now and buy some. You’ll be happy you did.

I haven’t tried the white flour pastas made by Garofalo, but judging by how good this is, and by what other food bloggers have to say, I’m guessing they’re also spectacularly good.

  1. I haven't seen it, and don't have any information about it, sorry. I don't find it when I enter it into Amazon.com, which is where I've found many of their other pasta shapes.

  2. I vaguely remember some ten years ago shopping at CostCo @ Thousand Oaks, CA, particularly for their extensive selection of ORGANIC pastas.
Specifically: Garafalo's ORGANIC ANGEL HAIR PASTA.

I beg of you, please (please) tell me Garafalo still offers an ORGANIC Capellini… It has completely disappeared off the CostCo shelves…. I am almost willing to consider it was all a dream…
We miss it, dearly. Richard Anderson

  3. Hi Wendy, fun hearing from you! I still adore this whole wheat spaghetti and buy it all the time. I wish Costco would carry other whole wheat varieties, but they do have a lot of other Garofalo pasta in the regular pasta types.

  4. Hi there Kalyn, it's Wendy in Rome (www.flavorofitaly.com); we met at IACP Austin.
Just the very briefest comment to compliment you on your Garofalo pasta recommendation. I've been in Italy 30 years and can confirm that Garofalo is just about the best packaged pasta you can buy in Italy.
One other reader mentioned that it's hard to find, but available at Costco. I saw that the last time I was in the U.S. Not bad that it can be purchased in bulk at an extremely accessible price.

  5. i'm so glad you posted this, kalyn! we fell in love with Garofalo pasta when we spent 3 months in Italy this year… but the only place I can find it where we are is Costco (and only spaghetti and penne). And we've all hated every whole wheat pasta we've tried. Time to try Garofalo's WW.

  6. Ben, thanks for the info. I'd love to try some of the other shapes in whole wheat.

  7. I have used the white flour garofolo till now but would love to switch to healthier pastas. Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll try and get this pasta next time.

  8. Susan, I may be searching for it online too because yesterday I didn’t see it at my Costco. (They did have the white flour types though, so maybe they’re just out of this one, fingers crossed.) I do have 9 packages, which will last me a while, but this is good enough that I would pay to have it shipped!

  9. Just one more reason why I wish there were a Costco in my area! Finding good whole wheat pasta is hit-or-miss for me, and good ww spaghetti is the hardest to find. I wonder if I could buy this online. Hmmm…

  10. Mimi, so happy to hear you like Spike. This spaghetti is awesome if you can find it there.

  11. When Kalyn recommends it, I figure it’s worth looking for!

BTW, I’ve tried Spike several times now, and I like it!

  12. Hey Kalyn,

I have been eyeing this pasta for quite some time at Costco now. Never ceased to wonder what I would do with bundles of pasta lying around. Now, I have a reason to try it out.
    Very nice recipes, thanks!

  13. Tonight I had some of this for dinner with a simple sauce of slow roasted tomatoes, garlic, chopped basil and a bit of the pasta water, plus lots of parmesan cheese on top. Just fantastic.

  14. Hil, I’d love to know where you get the Gia Russa brand; sounds like something I need to try. If anyone else knows about this brand, please chime in. Meanwhile do try the Garofalo whole wheat spaghetti; I think you’ll like it!

  15. I’ve been buying the Garofalo white flour pastas at Costco for a while, and they are good. I would love to switch to a tasty whole wheat pasta, though! Thanks for the heads up!

  16. Gia Russa is my favorite whole wheat pasta brand. I actually like it better than most white pasta I’ve tried, as does my husband.

  17. I have never met a pasta I didn’t like…so if I see this at the store, I’ll have to pick it up!

  18. I love whole wheat pasta, I have not tried this brand though. I will have to pick some up! Thanks for the review!

  19. I love whole wheat pasta. They do seem to be getting better at it as I remember when it was heavy and pasty.
We don’t get that brand in Canada but good whole wheat pasta is available here.
It has a nice, toothsome texture that goes so nice with fresh vegetables.

  20. Garofalo pasta is surely one of the best commercial pasta brands we have in Italy, whole wheat is so hard to find even in shops around here tho’ 🙁

  21. I wish I could get hands on some of this Dreamfields pasta — I have encountered this several times in other blogs.

The ones available to me in Japan taste like cardboard shreds, so I try to satisfy my pasta cravings by having a medium portion for lunch and a run before dinner 🙂
