Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Cholula Hot Sauce

Cholula Hot Sauce
Cholula Hot Sauce from Mexico is great for adding spicy flavor to Mexican or Tex-Mex dishes!

Since I’m heading to Austin today to eat barbecue and Tex-Mex food (and attend the BlogHer Food 2013 Conference), it seems like an appropriate time to give an official nod to original flavor Cholula Hot Sauce, which my favorite Mexican hot sauce!  (My other hot sauce pick would be Green Tabasco Sauce, which is made in the U.S.)  I’m not sure why I only tried this for the first time a few years ago, but since then Cholula is the sauce I’ve been using to add spicy flavor to Mexican or Southwestern dishes, and now it’s something that’s always in my fridge, with an extra bottle in the pantry.  My Costco carries a two-pack of the large 12 ounce bottles, and that’s my favorite way to buy it, but if there’s not a Costco where you are, a Mexican market is a good place to get this.

Keep reading to see the recipes I’ve made that use this flavorful sauce.

Slow Cooker Spicy Vegetarian Pinto Bean and Chard Burritos call for 2-4 T of Cholula, and I’d use the larger amount unless you’re making this for kids.
Slow Cooker Spicy Shredded Chicken Lettuce Wrap Tacos get some of their heat from Cholula Hot Sauce, and although that recipe only calls for 1-2 T of Cholula, I might use more!
Spicy Black Bean Patties with Cilantro, Guacamole, and Tomatoes uses just 2 teaspoons of Cholula in the patty mixture, but you could make them spicier!
If there was any doubt about my new-found love for Cholula, this Slow Cooker Browns-in-the-Crockpot Spicy Ground Beef for Tacos, Burritos, or Taco Salad uses 1/2-3/4 cup of hot sauce.  All that hot sauce is seasoning 3 pounds of ground beef, but if you’re making this for kids I’d use the smaller amount.

Do You like Cholula?

I know this product has a lot of fans, and if you’re one of them I’d love to hear in the comments about your favorite way to use it. (Recipe links are welcome.)  Next on my to-try list is Cholula Chile-Lime Hot Sauce, so if you’ve tried that one, let me know how you liked it.

  1. I LOVE this hot sauce too! We use it a lot on breakfast burritos. Adds the extra kick of flavor I crave. Also try it mixed with mayo — YUM! The lime one is good, especially for sprinkling on tortilla chips.

  2. Drooling at the sound of this mixed with mayo, and now I must try the lime one!

  3. I do not like super hot sauces. I discovered this at Basha's in Tucson. I love it! It's more spicy than not. Have also found it back east

  4. Cholula is good for Mexi meals…Tapatio is really tasty, too.
But, if I could only have one kind of hot sauce for the rest of my life, I'd have to go with sriracha.

  5. Liz, I can't do the scorching ones either.

    Babsiegirl, I'd have to agree!

  6. Cholula's on egg muffins is the best! Agreed with Suzanne, it's great in mayo for a sandwich spread.

Welcome to Austin! I hope you enjoy many wonderful restaurants my city has to offer. Stay cool!

  7. Kruez Market
    Lockhart, TX
A culinary delight. No sauce as S. TX BBW is a dry rub. Must try brisket and sausage. Get yourself some cheese and bread and butter pickles to finish out the experience.

    You. Will. Thank. Me.
    🙂

  8. This is my favorite also! You just can't beat it in terms of hot sauce!

  9. Oh, yes, there's always a bottle of Cholula in my pantry, too. And green Tabasco. And a few other hot sauces!

  10. Love it that so many people like this, and thanks to the Austin folks for the welcome and suggestions!

  11. Hooray for Cholula! Texas-girl approved. Now, I agree with Cristela about going to Kreuz market, but Franklin's Barbeque near downtown has made the Texas Monthly #1 Barbeque Joint this year and the Top 5 for a while. I highly recommend it! Or Louis Muellers in Taylor is another top-rated place. Be sure to order brisket. Oooooh – you're in MY country now! Enjoy Texas!!

  12. Kalyn; Bravo on today's "Hot Sauce Post". I'll admit to being spoiled by a lifetime in Phoenix for the incredible array of hot sauces on shelves at grocers and at mexican restaurants……Once a die hard advocate of Tabasco, it seems things have morphed. I like Cholula but my hand seems to reach for the "Tapatio Sauce", and my garage fridge is loaded with many other brands as well.
Great posts, cheers and thank you.
