Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks: Aidell’s Roasted Garlic and Gruyere Cheese Chicken Sausage

Aidell's Roasted Garlic and Gruyere Chicken SausageMy love affair with Costco has been well documented on this blog. I go to Costco nearly every week, and have a list of Costco staples that are always in my kitchen. Of course, like every faithful Costco shopper, I do sample products that are offered, although in recent years I’m becoming more picky about what samples I try. Luckily I wasn’t in a picky mood recently when they were handing out samples of these Aidells Roasted Garlic and Gruyere Cheese Chicken Sausages, made in San Francisco from chicken raised without antibiotics or hormones.

In the past I tried a couple of other versions of the Aidell’s Chicken Sausages, and none of them really excited me. For one thing, many of the sausages contain fruit (which to me is just wrong!) I’m also not a fan of sausage with “non-sausage” ingredients like artichokes, curry, or sun-dried tomatoes. (People with differing opinions, feel free to tell us about your favorite type of Aidell’s sausage in the comments. I’m just telling you about my own sausage prejudices here.)

I first tried the Roasted Garlic and Gruyere Cheese sausages at Costco three weeks ago, and I’ve been loving their garlicy flavor with just a hint of cheese. I made some for dinner for my dad and stepmother, who pronounced them to be very good. Of course sausage isn’t exactly a health food, but they’re low enough in fat, sodium, and cholesterol for an occasional quick dinner. This is definitely a product that’s going to get a permenent spot in my freezer, and these sausages are my latest choice for Kalyn’s Kitchen Picks, where I rave about products and kitchen items I love.   2. I LOVELOVELOVE the chicken & apple sausages. We sizzle them up on our George Forman grill. The sweetness carmelizes leaving them salty with a hint of sweetness. YUM!

  3. I’m not familiar with Aidell sausages but I have tried garlic and apple ones sold in my local supermarket in Singapore — they are surprisingly good and not at all “appley” in flavour.

  4. I haven’t found Aidell’s, but last time I was at Costco they offered a very similar chicken sausage as a sample. I was hooked on first bite! They are gouda and apple chicken sausages and are a bit skinnier than the Aidell’s. They freeze well and I’ve used them in all sorts of recipes. The nutritional facts aren’t too bad, either.

  8. Our costco does free tries of aidell’s constantly. These were really good!!! Because I have gestational diabetes (diet basically = south beach) I can’t eat their other varieties! Too many carbs.

  9. I’m with you on not liking fruit in my sausage. Most of their stuff hasn’t excited me but I’m willing to grab a package of these next time I run across them (since Cheese and Sausage work for me and Garlic is just the icing on the cake!)

  15. Yay! We can not get enough of Aidell’s—-especially the chicken and apple. My husband and I like the spicy habanero…mmm. Sometimes if you’re lucky, Costco will have a taste test. The kids like the chicken mango, too.

    Lydia, my Safeway and Albertson’s carry Aidell’s–but not in bulk like Costco. We tear open the package and freeze 4 in a bundle.

  16. Everytime we’re at CostCo I look at the Aidell’s sausages and want to try them. This flavor sounds like a good one to start out with since I always think the fruit flavored ones sound strange also.

  18. I love Aidell's products. I've never seen that particular variety of their sausage. I'll have to be on the lookout. I really like their chicken and apple sausage. (Please don't judge me!) I also like their teriyaki meatballs. I make a litlle sweet & sour glaze for them and skewer them with pineapple.

  22. This sounds very tasty – I haven’t seen it yet in New York. I am a fan of Aidell’s Chicken/Apple Sausage. What I like most about their products is that there is a decent level of flavor, and it can really dress up a dish.

  24. This sausage is the perfect thing. I really do love it. It’s a limited edition, btw, and the Aidell’s lady I spoke to said they only sell it at Costco. I am so scared they will take it away from us!

    I’ve never actually tried chicken sausage. I’m not a big fan of other types of sausage, but for some reason the chicken/turkey varieties interest me. I think I’m going to have to try them soon!

    Susy, these would be great with red cabbage. I’m open to the idea that apple might be good in sausage, but in the ones I tried, it wasn’t my favorite. (I’m not that into sweet flavors in general.)

    Josh, mango jalapeno, hmm. I don’t think I’ve seen that one. I do like mango more than lots of fruits, and I like jalapeno, so maybe.

  27. Re. fruit in sausages – here in the UK, we get pork and Bramley apple sausages that knock your socks off. They are heaven! There were also som limited dition venison and cranberry ones last year, and all year round we get combos like pork/sweet chilli/cilantro or pork/pancetta/parmesan and I *adore* them! You’ll have to visit us here in London so that I can try to convince you 😉

  30. I'll have to try these perhaps, they sound like they'll be delicious with my braised red cabbage. Although I'm trying to buy only locally produced naturally raised meats, they'll be good in a pinch.

    I however am a big lover of apples in my sausage. I bought some naturally raised pork sausage at the farmer's market and mixed in some grated apple & maple syrup – DELICIOUS!

  32. I haven’t ever actually been to a Costco, but there is a brand of chicken sausages (Han’s All Natural) carried by Whole Foods (at least here in Boston) that I always find delicious. Their spicy Italian style is my favorite, but I also love the sun dried tomato and basil flavor.

  33. I’ll look for these on my next Costco run. Unfortunately, not all Costco stores carry the same inventory, so I hope these sausages have made it east of the Mississippi. I’m not a huge sausage eater, but every now and then it’s great to add a few slices of sausage to a simple egg dish… or throw them on the grill for a quick supper.
