You’ve probably noticed that I’m a constant cycle of updating old favorite recipes with better photos, and sometimes when I’m updating the photos I can’t help improving the recipe as well. So when I decided to take new photos for these Ground Turkey Green Chile Tacos from back in the archives, I realized that I could switch the previously-used black bean salsa for a low-carb salsa and use my favorite low-carb tortillas and this would be a delicious low-carb taco recipe!
And I’m always a fan of avocado salsa on tacos, so that’s how these Ground Turkey Green Chile Tacos with Avocado Salsa got reinvented!
If anyone is thinking that ground turkey might be a bit boring, I promise you there is nothing remotely boring about the perfectly-seasoned ground turkey in this recipe. In fact, if you try it, this might become one of your favorite recipes for tacos! But if you’re not a ground turkey fan, make these delicious low-carb tacos with ground beef and they’ll still be delicious. You can certainly add other toppings like cheese, sour cream, lettuce, or salsa if you wish. But please try these tasty tacos the next time you need a quick dinner idea!
This recipe makes quite a bit of taco meat, so I am adding it to a new recipe category I’m working on called Weekend Food Prep. It will take me a long time to go through all my recipes and pick the ones that are suitable for cooking or prepping on the weekend to eat during the week, but you can take a peek at the new category if you’re a fan of weekend cooking like I am, and I’ll announce it with more fanfare when I have a bigger collection of recipes added there!
How to Make Ground Turkey Green Chile Tacos with Avocado Salsa:
(Scroll down for complete recipe including nutritional information.)
- Brown the chopped onion in olive oil, then add Kalyn’s Taco Seasoning and cook a minute or two more.
- Add a tiny bit more oil and cook the ground turkey until it’s well browned.
- Then add the granulated garlic, petite dice tomatoes, diced green chiles, lime juice, and a little salt and let the mixture simmer on low for about 30 minutes, adding a little water occasionally if needed. (I think this long simmering time really ramps up the flavor, but you could probably get away with slightly less time if you needed to.)
- While the meat simmers, finely chop the cilantro and red onion.
- Dice the avocado and toss with 2 tablespoons lime juice.
- Then combine diced avocado, red onions, cilantro, one more tablespoon lime juice, and a little olive oil to make the salsa, and when the meat is done you’re ready to eat!
- If you’re only making a couple of tacos you can heat the tortillas in the microwave or a dry frying pan, but for a larger crowd I’d wrap a bunch of them in foil and heat them in the oven for 15-20 minutes.
- Fill hot tortillas with the spicy ground turkey mixture and top with avocado salsa, or other taco toppings of your choice. Dinner is served!

Perfectly-seasoned ground turkey taco meat, avocado and cilantro salsa, and softened tortillas combine to make delicious Ground Turkey Green Chile Tacos with Avocado Salsa. For this recipe I used my frozen lime juice, my favorite low-carb tortillas, Green Tabasco Sauce (affiliate link), and of course Kalyn’s Taco Seasoning! (Use your favorite purchased taco seasoning blend if you prefer.)
You can replace avocado with a 15 oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained well, for the original version of this recipe.

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
I used low-carb tortillas, so with the avocado salsa this would be great for a low-carb diet, and also good for any phase of the South Beach Diet. If you’re making these tacos for the South Beach Diet, use ground turkey that’s not over 10% fat. The tacos would be phase 2 or 3 for South Beach, but you could use this ground turkey mixture and make a delicious taco salad or eat in lettuce wraps for Phase one or Keto diets.

Thanks Jack, glad you like it.
Thanks Catie, so glad you enjoyed them so much. (And I love being the first blog you've commented on; thanks for taking the time!)
I've never commented on a blog before, but these tacos were so good I felt I had to let you know how impressed I was! I found the recipe on pinterest and it led me to your site!
I was worried about this being to limey, but it wasn't at all, it was absolutely perfect! I added grilled corn and diced avocado to the black bean salsa, and it was delicious, you could easily make these vegetarian by just doing the salsa with tomatoes in the tortilla!
I will absolutely be making these all summer long! Fabulous recipe!
We enjoyed this very much; very flavourful!
I could eat just the black bean cilantro salsa in the tortillas – that sounds so good Kalyn!
OMG! The pic made me crave it sooo much. Can't wait to make this one. I will have to use a vegetarian sub for the turkey but apart from that the rest of them will pretty much be the same.
Lol – great minds and all that… I posted TexMex fajitas this week! Love the sound of this recipe, and yes, amazingly I still have the beans you sent me! Husband hid them at the back if a cupboard and I rediscovered them a week or 2 ago!
So much flavor going on in these- they look amazing. And so full of protein and healthy fiber. Nice work!
You really packed a ton of flavor into these! Well done!
I've had tacos on the brain for a couple days and now after seeing this, I have to make some. That black bean salsa looks really delcious!
Lydia, I wanted to use even more lime, but Jake held me back!
What jumps right out at me is the serious dose of lime juice in this recipe! I love lime, especially in the winter when it really brings that taste of summer into the kitchen.
South Beach does not limit serving sizes, except for a few foods. However, I'd guess that two of these small tacos would be a meal for most people.
How many tacos would constitute a serving under South Beach rules?
It is a black bean salsa. There are no tomatoes in the salsa.
Looking fwd to trying this recipe. Is there a typo in the salsa? It states can of beans, should it be tomatoes? ?
For heating tortillas – I've found the best way may SEEM time consuming, but it really isn't once you get going… We heat a non-stick skillet or griddle pan – and lay them out flat. Turn when warm on once side, then stack on a plate, with a fabric napkin to wrap around when done. Keep an close eye and don't let them get crispy. They stay plenty warm, as they are stacked as soon as they come off the griddle – and the best part, pliable/foldable, non-tearing when making tacos, etc. Cheers! Can't wait to try this taco recipe!
Kalyn, I so agree with you on ground turkey being a bit boring, and your recipe deals with it perfectly!
I am also fond of some low carb tortillas, but found a brand I like even more than the Mission. Unfortunately, now that I want to share the brand with you, I cannot remember the name! 😉 (Story of my life….)
