If you’re going to stick with any kind of healthy eating plan you need some easy and quick options for times when you just don’t want to cook, and this is one of my favorite things to make for an easy lunch or dinner, especially whenever avocados are on sale. It’s nothing more complicated than avocado mashed with a fork, spiced up with a bit of spicy chile powder and salt, and then eaten in a 100% whole wheat pita pocket. This recipe is so tasty though, and it’s especially satisfying for a quick lunch!
What kind of pita bread do I use for this recipe?
This recipe is one of the reasons I’m a huge fan of Joseph’s Bakery Low-Carb Pita Bread, and that’s the kind I’d always use for this recipe. You can buy Joseph’s Low-Carb Pita Bread (affiliate link) at Amazon if you don’t find it where you live. I buy it there and this is something I always have in the freezer!
What ingredients do you need for this recipe?
- Joseph’s Low-Carb Pita Bread (affiliate link)
- Romaine lettuce
- ripe avocado
- ground Chipotle chile pepper (affiliate link) or other ground chile

Steps for Making Easy Spicy Avocado in Low-Carb Pita Bread:
- I fold one piece of low-carb pita bread over and toast it in the toaster oven while I prepare the lettuce and avocado.
- I prefer Romaine Lettuce for this. Cut into thin strips and soak in ice-cold water in the salad spinner, then remove the water and spin the lettuce dry.
- Mash the avocado and then mix in spicy chile powder and salt to taste.
- Spread half the avocado mixture on each pita pocket.
- Top with shredded lettuce, fold over and eat!

- 2 pieces Joseph's Bakery low-carb pita bread
- 1 cup shredded Romaine lettuce
- 1 very ripe avocado
- 1/4 tsp. spicy chile powder (or more, see notes)
- 1/4 tsp. salt or Vege-Sal, or a little more (see notes)
Instructions
- Fold over two pieces of low-carb pita bread over and toast in the toaster oven. This takes about 1 minute per side.
- Cut Romaine Lettuce into thin strips and soak in ice-cold water in the salad spinner, then remove the water and spin the lettuce dry.

- Spread half the avocado mixture on each pita pocket.

Notes
I love Vege-sal for this recipe, but regular salt will work. I used ground Chipotle, but any spicy chile powder would work here.
Kalyn created this for lunch one day in 2006, and she's been making it ever since!

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
Easy Spicy Avocado in Low-Carb Pita Bread would make a great low-glycemic or South Beach diet lunch. If you use low-carb pita bread, this is pretty low in carbs, but probably still too high for Keto diets.

Thanks Paz!
Yum, yum yum!
Jacque, the Foldits are great, but this is good no matter what kind of pita you use. Hope you enjoy!
I love avocado, so this is spot on for me. Like those foldits, we don't have them, so it would have to be a plain old whole wheat pitta for me.
Thanks Barb. I had nowhere to go but up on this one! Glad you like it.
Kalyn you surely have come a long way with your food styling photos!!
I love the smashed mashed avocados mixed with a little vege salt lime juice and spread it on sourdough toast.
This is a perfect summer sandwich Kalyn……thanks
Thanks Merisi! And I have definitely improved.
Mouth-watering!
I don't laugh about your older photo, it is really hard to find the right white balance, without studio lights. 😉
Jeanette, I love these high-fiber ones even more than the old brand I used to buy; bet you would like them!
I love avocado – this could be my lunch almost everyday. I've seen those pita breads but never tried them.
it amazing how something so simple can be so delicious.
Kayln, another great recipe from you. Thanks, I love avacado sannies!
Beautiful photo of one of my favorite foods – avocados. I’ll be looking for Kangaroo pitas up here.
I love avocados and chipotle chillies, I think I would really enjoy this!
Alanna, I like the idea of misting and seasoning the pitas. Haven’t tried that.
Sher, we could put some avocado on our bacon and tomato sandwiches, what do you say?
Joe, it’s a mystery to me why they’re so hard to find. I keep bugging the people at both of the stores where I shop, so maybe that will help.
I have a hard time finding them, but I love the Kangaroo whole wheat pitas!
Yes, it’s easy. But, the best thing is that it would taste so good!!! I love avocado sandwiches.
Looks GREAT! BTW when I crisp up pitas, I also mist VERY lightly with olive oil, then sprinkle on pimenton or Italian seasoning or whatever sounds good from the spice shelves! They’re wondrous …
Riana, very cool. I am so happy for you. I think you should still nap as much as you can to store up sleep for those long nights!
I love avocados! I just made quesadillas with avocados, cheese and jalapeno peppers. The best. And yes, woohoo, I’m preggers, 13 weeks now, that is why I was so quiet for awhile–off napping!
All the best,
Riana
