(This is the third in a series of reports on places I ate when I visited Washington D. C. recently. You can check my page of restaurant reviews to read others.) Washington D.C. is a town of great restaurants. The competition for restaurants is so fierce here that a place can’t stay in business unless it’s a cut above the norm. However, even in a town where you’re expecting that every restaurant will be a great place to eat, once in a while you’ll find a place that completely wows you. That’s how my friend Tia and I felt the night we went to Mourayo.
The restaurant is billed as “unique contemporary Greek cuisine from yesterday, today, and tomorrow”. It’s a small place, a tiny bit on the noisy side, but charmingly decorated. The servers have costumes in the style of Greek fishermen. Mourayo has been featured in Washingtonian Online. the Food Network’s Tasty Travel (scroll down), and many more places online.
If you think gyros, souvlakia, and baklava are all there is to Greek food, you’ll be amazed at the variety and quality of food on the menu at Mourayo. The night we went we weren’t overly hungry, and ordered a selection of salads and appetizers to share between the two of us. Everything we had was absolutely outstanding. For sure this is a restaurant worth returning to again and again.
Symposium Edesmata is a selection of dips and spreads to eat with pita bread. It includes Tyrokafteri, Tzatziki, Taramosalata, Skordalia, Fava, Houmus, and Patzaria. The pita bread was warm and delicious, and we couldn’t decide which of these we liked most, they were all so wonderful.
Salata Voskou is the traditional Greek Shepherd salad, but this one was out of the ordinary due to the freshness of the ingredients, the quality of the feta, and the extra touch of marinating the cucumbers and tomatoes in dressing. The houmus on top was a nice touch. This alone would make a fantastic lunch.
This appetizer was a special that night, a traditional pita triangle filled with crab and cheese. It was delicious and the presentation was wonderful.
